Elizabeth in Switzerland: Two Weeks Without Luggage

on Tue, 08/15/2017 - 12:28
Swiss Untours vacations in Switerland

Ten years ago, our beloved Hal Taussig, my boss at the time, sent me on a Swiss Untour as part of my job. Quite a perk! Hal wanted me to experience his travel company in action, so I could prepare the board of the Untours Foundation to one day inherit the business.

The adventure began with Hans supplying me with dress size flannel shirts and size 12 high top sneakers. Hans accurately determined that the sneakers would stay on my feet, if laced tightly enough. And so our many Alpine hikes took place with me in what felt like clown shoes. With Hans leading the way and me in my big shoes, I felt we were Frick and Frack laughing as we went.

The Golden Train Line of Switzerland, Blazing through the Swiss Heartland and Oberland

on Mon, 08/14/2017 - 10:54
Swiss rail travel, Swiss Untour
There's no place in the world for train travel quite like Switzerland

The GoldenPass Line links three regions, two languages and eight lakes, tempting travelers to discover some of Switzerland’s most diverse delights. In the morning the timeless tradition of German-language Central Switzerland. Followed by the beautiful Bernese Oberland. And in the evening the French flair of Lake Geneva.

The first stretch runs directly through the Swiss Heartland Untour. This first the modern Luzern-Interlaken Express takes travelers along the lovely lakes of Alpnach, Sarnen, and Lungern, climbing to

Switzerland rail trips on the Swiss Untour
For Alpine enthusiasts, a visit to Switzerland is pure paradise. It is also easily discovered and enjoyed, thanks to the extensive network of mountain railways, all accessible with the Swiss Travel Pass. The pass covers travel between cities and into the mountain villages around Untours territory.

But sometimes, our guests want to venture to the highest peaks of the Alps.

Swiss Untourists know that on most premium routes, holders of a Swiss Travel System ticket pay only half price.

Good to Our Staff

on Mon, 07/31/2017 - 12:07
Untours is a B Corp with good policies for employees
Untours is good to its employees. This is something we are proud of and something that we know allows us to offer better service to our customers. Our regular B Corp re-certification process verifies our commitment to treating employees well. When we say it, we can verify it.

Current staff members have worked here for 15 - 25 years, enjoying an average 4 weeks of paid vacation a year plus paid sick time, holidays, and personal days. That may occasionally be inconvenient when you call and cannot get the person you wish to speak with.

Untourists Report from Central Scotland: News and Reviews You Can Use!

on Tue, 07/25/2017 - 10:21
Dunblane, Bridge of Allan, Stirling, Central Scotland Untour

Our Central Scotland Untour has been running for almost a year now. We introduced it in fall of 2016 as the “Scotland Untour” but rechristened it Central Scotland this summer to make way for our newest offering in Inverness, the Scottish Highlands Untour. From its inception, the (Central) Scotland Untour has gotten rave reviews, most notably for our staff person Val and for the friendliness of the Scots. Here are some reviews directly from our guests there, from both 2016 and the first part of 2017. I hope their apartment info and other suggestions are helpful!

Meet Ellen Peters, Professional Voice and Untours Accounting Diva

on Wed, 07/19/2017 - 11:11
Untours staff Ellen
Ellen Peters has been part of the Untours family for 17 years, working in our US office. If you have called the office you may have spoken with her, but only briefly as she passed your call. Ellen is our accounting director, so when all goes well, our guests never talk to her. Yet our enterprise could not run without her.

In her time at Untours, Ellen has managed personnel, overseen our office affairs, balanced our books, initiated our worm composting, and even helped start our Alsace Untour many years ago. Here are some of Ellen's favorites. We hope they are useful!

Swiss Rail Update: The New Gotthard Base Tunnel, an Engineering Marvel

on Thu, 07/06/2017 - 10:05
Swiss Untour
Swiss Untourists use their Swiss Travel Pass to zip all over the country by rail (and boat and bus), taking in the best of the Alps. Here is some news about a new option, the Gotthard Base Tunnel. It offers insight into the engineering brilliance of the Swiss.

Construction of the world's longest train tunnel in Switzerland took 17 years. Traveling through it takes 17 minutes. The new Gotthard Base Tunnel is a project of pioneering proportions – a once-in-a-century structure extending for 57 kilometers (over 35 miles) through the Alps.

In December 2016 the two-way tunnel opened for

Helen's Florence: 7 of Our Favorite Overlooked Gems

Hidden gems in Florence, the Florence Untour
Helen Glave, on-site host of the Florence Untour, is a whiz with logistics and hospitality. But she is also deeply knowledgeable about Florence’s sights. We recently ask her to name her favorite hidden gems of Florence. Here is her response.

It is quite difficult to signal 'hidden gems' in Florence as most are so well documented. Here are a few personal favorites, places that might be easy to miss or overlook. Although they might be known, they are a lot less busy than the main attractions.

Journey to the Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands

on Tue, 06/20/2017 - 09:39
Isle of Skye on the Scottish Higlands Untour

It was a perfect day for a trip to the Isle of Skye, one of the best day trips in the Scottish Highlands. Cool temperatures, no rain in the forecast and a nearly cloudless sky. I had an ambitious itinerary of sights that I wanted to see, so I got an early start. I took the shortest route from Inverness that took me through wild and mountainous country. At times, the road followed the scenic rail line with regular passenger service between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh.
