The Robinsons Fell Hard for the Swiss Hasliberg, and We Have the Photos to Prove It!

on Fri, 06/02/2017 - 13:27
The Hasliberg, Switzerland, Swiss Untour

Meet the Robinsons. Paul and Eleanor recently traveled to Switzerland with us, spending two weeks on the Swiss Heartland Untour.

As Paul said when he returned from their trip:
"We have been on other structured tours in Europe. They have been great, but this one was super great. Why? We could check the weather and determine what we wanted to do. We could attend a concert we just heard about and could work it into our schedule. We could take a morning 'off' the last week just to catch up on journals.

Inverness in the Scottish Highlands with Untours
Welcome the homebase of our new Scottish Highlands Untour. Inverness is a walkable town in the heart of the Highlands with good international restaurants, cozy pubs, and live music.
“It is a perfect departure point for exploring the Scottish Highlands,” says Untours President Brian Taussig-Lux. “But what I love about Inverness is that you can walk into tranquil green spaces without leaving town.”
While the Isle of Skye and the Malt Whisky Trail are within day trip distance, here are 10 things to check out in and around Inverness.

6 Reasons to Love Locarno, Home of our Swiss Ticino Untour

on Tue, 05/23/2017 - 09:00
The Swiss Ticino Untour is Locarno, Switzerland
Our Swiss Ticino Untour offers the perfect marriage of Italian romance and Swiss efficiency, with spectacular hikes, excellent train connections, and picturesque lakeside towns.
Here are 6 reasons to fall in love with Locarno, homebase of our Swiss Ticino Untour.

1. History

Locarno was settled before Roman times and was an important glass-making center. Its continued prominence in the Middle Ages is seen in the ruins of the Visconti Castle. Then Locarno was in the hands of several noble families of Lombardi and it became an important market town.

Join Us at Stirling Castle in Central Scotland

on Wed, 05/10/2017 - 10:22
Stirling Castle on the Scotland Untour

Stirling Castle is one of the most important castles in Scotland. Many feel it is actually the best, even better than Edinburgh's. It is surely the crowning jewel of Stirling. The town and its quaint satellite villages make up our Central Scotland Untour, offering easy rail access to Edinburgh and its castle.

But we strongly recommend you stick around town and give Stirling Castle its due time. Having rushed through it myself, I would say it deserves half a day for exploration, to allow you time to interact with museum staff, read the detailed explanations, and walk the ramparts.

Francoise, Untours staff for your apartment stay in Paris

“I enjoy meeting people, especially foreigners,” explains Françoise Guilledroit, our new local staff person for the Paris Untour. Having lived and traveled abroad, she understands their perspective well.

Françoise was born in northern France and currently resides in Paris with her husband, who is an art specialist working in Paris and Brussels. Her daughters, both in their 20s, live in the UK. She enjoyed traveling at that age as well.

Tuscan Table: 10 Things You Must Taste in Florence

on Mon, 04/24/2017 - 12:11
Never plan a vacation when you are hungry. If you do, you will surely end up in Tuscany. On second thought, let your stomach guide you. When you consider the region’s sublime natural beauty and Florence’s countless Renaissance masterpieces, it is easy to overlook the food.
But Florence is a great place to connect with the region’s culture and history through its markets and restaurants. From some of Europe’s best fine dining to cheap eats around its global student culture, Florence has something for every budget. Many dishes evolved from scarcity, and the cucina povera of the peasants.

For Earth Day, Untours' Environmental Practices and Lessons From Europe

on Wed, 04/19/2017 - 10:07
Untours is a B Corp that uses solar power

Untours is very concerned about the environment, but not in a lip-service, greenwashing kind of way. We honestly and truly care. We work to mitigate the environmental impact of travel and to minimize and offset our office carbon footprint. Our B Corp certification process screens us for environmental policies and practices, so our values are tested and lived, and certified as more than a slogan!

Here are some of the things we do to be a business that is good for the environment.

  • We have an 18.8 kW solar installation that provides a substantial portion of the electricity used in the building.

Happy Birthday to the Untours Foundation: The Ungala Toasts 25!

on Wed, 04/12/2017 - 09:25
Untours and the Untours Foundation celebrate the Ungala

On a chilly evening at the start of April, the Untours Foundation gathered with progressive business leaders, community activists, entrepreneurs, donors, foundation leaders, Untourists, and Untours staff and friends to celebrate its silver anniversary. We gathered to acknowledge the Untours Foundation and its 25 years of funding Fair Trade, job creation, green development, and economic empowerment. We had a lot to celebrate, after over 7 million dollars of foundation money has been cycled to and through organizations to fuel job creation and strengthen local economies.

Kunstmuseum: Modern Art Fix in Basel

on Mon, 04/03/2017 - 11:15
Basel art museum

On a recent visit to the Kunstmuseum in Basel, I was overwhelmed by the size and breadth of the museum's modern art collection.

A friendly guard explained it quite succinctly. "Yes, Switzerland and America have the largest collections of Modern Art because they could quietly collect and protect 'degenrate art' while Hitler was marching through Europe." I'd never thought of it before, but it made sense. These sorts of interactions and epiphanies are why we travel, and part of the magic that brings museums alive and fills their contents with meaning!

So let me introduce you to one of my new favorite art museums in Europe.
