Ireland's Iveragh Peninsula, Part 2: The Skellig Ring and Islands

on Thu, 01/28/2016 - 10:43
Views from the Ring of Kerry, on the Ireland Untour
This is our second post on the Iveragh Peninsula, better known as the Ring of Kerry. Read our first post here. Our series will continue, with features on the Dingle and Beara Peninsulas. Subscribe to our blog so you won’t miss a single post!
Again, this post is based on travel by car from Kenmare, homebase of the Ireland Untour.
Visit the Skellig Ring to venture off the beaten track. This scenic road winds through lovely towns and ruined abbeys and seaside villages. Better yet, the tour buses cannot reach it. Here are some highlights, though we encourage you to venture off on your own.

Remembering Hal Taussig (1924 - 2016)

on Tue, 01/12/2016 - 10:35
Hal Taussig on a Swiss Untour
Harold Taussig Sr. passed away on the afternoon of January 11, 2016 in his home. He was 91 years old.
Hal was an accomplished businessman, a fervent booster of Fair Trade, an activist for socially responsible business, and an early micro-enterprise investor. His Untours Foundation, created with the profits of his successful tour company, has lent over 7 million dollars to small startups and businesses around the world to create jobs and economic opportunities for those most in need.
Hal understood what it meant to build a business from the ground up.

You may have never heard of the Iveragh Peninsula, but you’ve surely heard of the Ring of Kerry, and that is the scenic driving trail that traces the best vistas of this lovely coastline. But some of the peninsula’s finest treasures are off of the main road. Here is a rundown of the peninsula, with access based on your use of a rental car. Our write-up is oriented for access from Kenmare, charming homebase of the Ireland Untour. We advise you to pace yourself and stop often to enjoy the views.

To Greece with Love (and Music!)

on Mon, 11/23/2015 - 15:46
The Greece Untour in Napflio
One of my favorite Untours is our Greece Untour, with vacation rental apartments set in lovely historic Nafplio. The old town is picturesque and charming, its narrow alleys lined with flower boxes and its squares and promenades filled with cafe tables and restaurants. A beautiful seafront offers sweeping views, and a Venetian fortress looms high above. The town is at once cosmopolitan and invitingly cozy and friendly.
And the day trips beyond it are astounding, from Epidaurus to Mystra, Athens to Mycenae, Corinth to the islands. All of the Peloponnese is your oyster.

8 Reasons Ireland is the Perfect Family Destination

on Wed, 11/11/2015 - 09:51
Killarney National Park on an Ireland Untour
Simply put, Ireland is the perfect destination for family travel! I discovered this in June, when my husband and I took our 6-year-old son to Ireland for two weeks. While some destinations in Europe are all about museums, architecture, and culture, Ireland offers a broad diversity of things to do, with castles, farms, and outdoor adventures tailored to a young boy’s passions!
The question is not if we will return to Ireland, but when. The next time we will bring my parents, and Ireland would make the perfect spot for a multigenerational trip. Country Kerry is the ideal homebase.

Kids books to inspire travel

As we enter holiday shopping season, it is time to think about thoughtful gifts for all the people we love, the big ones and the small ones. I happen to think that travel is one of the best experiences you can give to the young. It is one of the only purchases that makes you richer! Books also fit that category. Why not kindle your (grand)kids' curiosity about far-off places and cultures with some good books? Here are a few we recommend for young children.

Irish Pub Etiquette: Make the Most of Your Night Out!

on Thu, 10/29/2015 - 10:11
Outside the pub, Kenmare Ireland
More than a place to drink, the pub is a civic institution in Ireland, a sort of communal clubhouse where neighbors and families meet to mark milestones, connect, or just pass the time. Stop in for a cup of tea, a chat, a meal, or a pint. All are welcome. Here are a few pointers to help you fit in and enjoy the experience.
Be specific when you order. As Kenmare-based author VJ Fadely says, "If you ask for a Guinness, you’ll get a pint. If you order a 'pint' you’ll likely get a Guinness.

Happy 40th Birthday! The Ungala Celebrates the Many Sides of Untours

on Mon, 10/26/2015 - 11:18
Happy Birthday to Untours

We recently gathered for the first ever Ungala, a celebration of 40 years of Untours and the vital work of the Untours Foundation. The celebration was a happy meeting of tribes, a place for people working in all aspects of Untours to connect. Current Untours employees gathered with Untours Foundation board members, foundation loan recipients, and a handful of local donors, many of them Untourists who have taken multiple trips with us!

To Basel and Beyond: Contemporary Art and Design in Switzerland

on Thu, 09/10/2015 - 10:47
Art on a Swiss Untour, Basel

We love to talk (and write) about the sylvan beauty of small Swiss mountainside villages, pristine lakes and hiking trails, and the old traditions of the Alps. Don’t ever doubt our love of cows and their pastures. But remember the Swiss are at the forefront of modern and contemporary art and design, as creators and collectors. Art Basel draws a high profile international art crowd in its annual multinational exhibits of modern and contemporary art and design. While that may not be your scene, here are some good suggestions for the art and design geeks in your travel party.
