London tips, apps, and websites for travel

We have been traveling with Untours for 26 years. Hard to believe it has been that long! Our most recent Untour was two weeks in London and one in Scotland. If you are interested, I maintained a daily blog with photos for our friends at Researching and preparing for a trip is part of the anticipatory fun for me. There were some things I did before leaving that I found to be invaluable during our trip and wanted to share them with fellow Untourists.

London Beyond the Majestic and Stately

London like a local

Well, with one exception, I would say that the wild parakeets of London carry their own majesty. But aside from meeting these marvelous birds, my London adventure this summer with my husband to visit our daughter, was anything but the London I’ve known in the past.

Although we did see the more traditional musical Matilda, we attended an interactive theater to experience Alice Underground. Down the rabbit hole, attending the tea party, holding hands in a crack-the-whip fashion up and down stairs, this theater experience was indeed active and interactive. It’s doubtful this show would even be legal in the US with all the frights and tripping opportunities, but what fun!

Big Ben in London on an Untour

London is the largest city in Europe, and in my opinion, the best city in the world. With the perfect collision of old and new, London has an intriguing history and is filled with charm. Living in London I often overhear tourists’ conversations on the Tube (the underground transportation system) regarding their experiences. Be it a positive reaction to walking around Hyde Park or a feeling of boredom regarding the Tate Modern. In order to avoid the more unfortunate reviews, I’ve narrowed down all of the amazing things to do in London to seven absolute must-sees for any trip.

London Like a Local: What you Should and Should Not Do in the English Capital

Don't stick out like a sore thumb! Here are some quick tips to help you make a good impression in London, and to make merry with the locals.
You Should…
Stand on the right side of the tube escalators and walk on the left. Londoners abhor when people stand on the left.
You Should…
Visit a pub outside of the touristy hubs (Leicester Square, Oxford Street, Trafalgar Square, etc.). Find a pub filled with more locals than tourists and sit down for a pint and enjoy classic pub food. It is an incorrect stereotype that pub food is bad.

The Perfect London Picnic

Hyde Park Albert Memorial

London is filled with great international cuisine options across the city, but one of the best ways to enjoy good London weather and eat like the locals is to head to the local grocer and pull together a picnic. Having grown up in a fairly rural area filled with fields, trees and an overall abundance of nature, regular picnics for me are a must in London. Few people know that 60% of the city is actually green space, be that parks, lawns, roof gardens, etc. One way to experience the city like a local is to plan the Perfect London Picnic.

Q & A with Ben Ovington: Meet Our Local Host in London

Ben in Amsterdam Untours Hosts

Our London on-site staff person Ben Ovington shares his own personal London with us and gushes about his loves: "The variety, the pace of life, and the food! Londoners are known for working hard and efficienty, but there is such a goofy, loving side to us (most often seen after the 9-5 hustle). Because London is such a large melting pot of people, all bringing to the city their own cultures and cuisines, we tend to eat quite well (and often). As Samuel Johnson said 'If a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.'"
