Our 3 Favorite Markets in Barcelona

Santa Caterina Market on a Barcelona Untour

Barcelona boasts the biggest network of municipal markets in Europe, with over 40 food markets and 6 non-food markets. The importance of the modern market in Barcelona dates back to the 19th century when the first covered markets were built. Since then, markets have come to be thought of as vital public spaces. Each market has its own story, unique architecture, and often its own specialty.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Meet Adriana: Our Anchor in Barcelona

Adrianna in Barcelona

Meet  Adriana, our local Untours staff representative on the Barcelona Untour. She is a great resource for our guests in Barcelona, resourceful, smart, full of city knowledge, and quick with a friendly smile. Like so many of our European staff members, Adriana has a fascinating background and a very rich professional life beyond her work with us.

I love traveling and I do it all the time. It's amazing, being back home, to be able to explain details of my city (and my favorite one) to those who love doing the same thing!

I was born in Barcelona and hold a BA in Media and Communication Studies

Top 10 Places to Go in Spain

Barcelona

This seaside city, known for its quirky architecture, outstanding seafood, and rich art history, is a must-see for anyone traveling to Spain. Architecture really is the center of attention, with great works from Antoni Gaudí, the famously-unfinished church of La Sagrada Familia, and many other cathedrals, buildings and museums. The city’s most visited shopping street, La Rambla, attracts hundreds of tourists daily, so if you’re looking for a wardrobe update, this is the place to do it.

Tapas Confidential: How to Navigate Spain's Tapas Bars Like a Native

on Mon, 04/13/2015 - 10:42

Welcome to Spain, where eating habits are a little different than ours. If you value eating with the locals but prefer your dinner before 9pm, you'd best discover Spain's bountiful tapas bars!

Dodge Amaral, Spanish Untour Director, agrees. "For folks who really can't or don't want a sit-down meal at 10pm, instead of eating in a restaurant that serves at 'our hours' (meaning it's a tourist place or hotel restaurant), going to tapas bars is perfect for getting fed at a reasonable hour."

"You can ask or see what's served as raciones if you want more than a couple bites of something."

Sonia on the Barcelona Untour

I feel lucky to work with a small but dedicated crew of globalists. Our staff is worldly, broad minded, and very well traveled. They've elevated my thinking, stoked my curiosity about new parts of the globe, and helped me grow into a citizen of the world. I recently asked them a simple question: What's your favorite Untour? Some of their answers surprised me. Below, read their responses, and my own two-part answer to what I actually found to be a very tough question.

Barcelona: A High-Speed Tour

on Fri, 01/30/2015 - 09:04
Barcelona Untour

Of all the cities where we've set up Untours, perhaps none is as colorful and dynamic as Barcelona. This capital of Catalonia is a cradle of interesting and experimental architecture, a hotbed of foodie innovation, and an evolving city with a historic core and lots of new growth along its waterfront and elsewhere. Barcelona is a city on the move!

Check our this time lapse video. It captures the vibrant life and vivid beauty of Barcelona. (Though if you aren't a fan of techno, you may want to turn down the volume.) Enjoy!

Don and Joanne Popeck, Untourists of the Week: Untours is a bridge

on Tue, 06/24/2014 - 09:12

For us, it is a "bridge." We love travel independence. Back in our younger days we would just pick a place, hop on a plane, get there and wing it - rent a car, stay at bed & breakfasts, rarely make a reservation for anything - and had great experiences. Now we need to be more conservative, yet we don't like the "herding around" characteristic of group travel. We find Untours a great fit - great pre-trip planning, enough put in place to provide peace of mind, excellent welcoming and orientation, and the safety net of having someone to contact if a need arises.

And the Unny winners are...

Untourist Ron Anderson captures a great vineyard shot from his Tuscany Untour

As you may know, we had the inaugural Unny Awards just recently. These awards are our way of recognizing the regions which have welcomed Untours all these years.

The Unnies are fun and lighthearted and that's how we like things around here.

We like to think of them as the Oscars® for Untours, though I admit we can't top the touching, heartfelt acceptance speech by Lupita Nyong'o last night.

Here come the Unny Awards!

on Sun, 02/23/2014 - 16:03
Untours hosts the first annual Unny Awards, a celebration of the regions it serves

Since I started working here way back in 2011, the Untours regions have been calling on me to give them some attention. Actually, not just attention, but distinction.

Now, I know they are all big enough to speak for themselves. They don't need you to tell them they're great; we all already know that.

What they really need is for you tell them where they excel.

That's why today, a week before the Oscars®, we're introducing the Unny Awards—a way for you to help us celebrate our regions and give them the recognition they truly deserve.
