Untourists of the Week: Andrew & Emily Maverick

on Tue, 07/02/2013 - 03:00

Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour and why you chose that particular destination?

We enjoyed two Untours in Spain in 2008.  First, we spent two weeks in Fuente Tojar (near Priego de Cordoba), enjoying auto trips to Granada, Cordoba, Sevilla.  Then to Malaga, where we turned in the car, and flew to Barcelona for another two weeks.  This time, without a car, and with our two teenaged grandchildren!

Why did you choose to go there?

We only knew Spain through studying Spanish, and through literature - and because our granddaughter had been studying Spanish in high school.

Raymond Heald, Untours

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

It was a dream vacation: 8 days on the Variety Voyager, the sleek 73-passenger yacht that put us ashore at the fabled ports of Capri, Lipari, Malta, plus 4 ports in Sicily. Then, a train ride to the sparkling Cinque Terre for 4 nights and a heavenly 2 weeks in the fabulous Bonalumi apartment in Locarno, with a breathtaking view of Lake Maggiore.

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?

"Fifteen years ago, I was so impressed with Untours that I wrote a letter to the New York Times travel editor and it was published. The things I liked enough to write about then have not changed; they’ve only gotten better."

Culture Clue: Barcelona had OTHER amazing architects!

I am surprisingly obsessed with Antoni Gaudi and his wonderful fanciful buildings, for someone who isn't a big architecture buff and who's never actually seen a Gaudi building. My Gaudi obsession is quite recent so, when Gordon and Joann Pitz's (our Untourists of the Week last week) wonderful travel logs pointed out that he had contemporaries, nearly as fanciful and truly remarkable as he.... well....I am going to have to get myself to Barcelona.

The Most Unforgettable 7 Minutes in Barcelona

Teleférico del Puerto (Aeri del Port) in Barcelona, Spain

p>If you're in Barcelona and are looking for a different perspective on things, you have to take a ride on the city's two cable cars: Teleférico del Puerto (aka Aeri del Port) and the Teleféric de Montjuïc.

First things first: you will most likely be scared at some point on these cable cars. Whether it's the initial take-off, the aged look of the towers and cars or just the fact that you're dangling hundreds of feet in the air, your fear will quickly pass once you realize the magnificence of what you're seeing from way up there.

dancing waters, Untours, Barcelona
We don't have a picture of our Untourists of the Week this week,  but we do have a shot of their favorite memory, the 'dancing waters' at the National Art Museum in Barcelona.  Jackie travelled with her sister Lillys on our Spanish Untours, Barcelona and Andalusia, and recently, when they were together on a family reunion, they composed this  for us.

Tell us a  little bit about your most recent Untour.

Spain was our most recent Untour, in October of 2011. We spent a week in Andalusia and a second week in Barcelona. The contrast between the two experiences was intriguing to us. Our lovely
