Paris Just Feels Right

Paris just feels right, doesn't it? I was there this past fall for work and just fell in love with La Ville-Lumière all over again. In fact, in this month's Untours Eurozine, I wrote about how Paris makes me feel. Here's an excerpt:

"The first time I went to Paris, I was barely out of college. I graduated on May 21 and was at Montreal's international airport on May 22 to head out for a 5-week backpacking tour of Western Europe.

At that point in my life, I naïvely wanted to see as much as humanly possible in those 5 weeks. I wasn't sure when (or if) I'd ever make it back to Europe so my plan was to just check things off my list.

After just 1 night in Paris, our first stop, I realized how misguided my sightseeing aspirations were. Although Paris was a full 1-week stop (still too short) on this adventure, I immediately regretted the planned, and jampacked, 10-city itinerary over the ensuing 4 weeks and 6 days. I wanted to live in Paris immediately and forego seeing anything else in the world. Ever. It grabbed me and didn't let go.

Now, don't get me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed my jaunt and have a hard time saying I wouldn't do it again. It was sightseeing at its finest, mixed with youth hostels and Nutella sandwiches. Most definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.

However, on my most recent trip to Paris, with Untours last fall, I gained a new apprecation for it. This time, I noticed things like the little open-air market outside my apartment (the Gracieuse) and the charming diversity of the Latin Quarter.

This last trip reminded me that it's not the things you see or do that make you fall in love with a place, it's the feeling you get when you're there. The next time I go to Paris, it's all feeling for me."

I had my 1st trip to Paris this past summer.  I was fortunate enough to win a trip there for 7 Days from Rick Steves Europe Through the Back Door.  I fell in love with the city and I do believe that 1 week there is just not enough.  I plan to go back for a longer visit as soon as I can.

Our Paris experience includes the end of a bus tour of Europe and a brief introduction to the City of Light many many years ago and then a REAL visit via Untours that gave us memories to last a life-tme - well almost - beacuse we are going back to Paris this coming September. Yes, to revisit some places, but also to explore new places and all at a relaxed pace with our latest edition of Rick Steve's Paris. When we started Untours they didn't offer the big cities and we really did prefer the villages in Switzerland, France and Italy. But they quickly changed our mind and we added Venice, Berlin, Vienna, Florence, and Paris to our travel history. We are looking forward to the fall visit!  Pete
