When I hear anything about the Queen, including news of her Diamond Jubilee, I think of my British friend explaining to me that the Queen’s laundry is ALWAYS hung on a line and never put in a clothes dryer. “Only renters in Britain use clothes dryers, and the poor dears have to spin their germs. The Queen’s laundry is sanitized by the sun and air.”

I’m always impressed by Hal and Norma’s (second story!) clothesline as I am by those of all my European friends. This includes the clothesline I used in a St. Gallen apartment building, where my dear Swiss friend, Riccarda, lived. When it was cold or rainy, Riccarda was given a weekly turn with this clothesline hung in a toasty attic.

I was recently reminded of how much energy we would save in the US, if we gave up our clothes dryers, so I’m hanging a clothesline, and will give it a try.

Why am I talking about this in a Foundation blog? Our commitment at the foundation is to end poverty and preserve the earth. We have to walk our talk. That means I need a clothesline!

And here’s my favorite clothes line joke:
