Monday Memories: Checkpoint Sue

Sue Baker, one of our top Media staffers, shares her memory of this pic…

It was the spring of 1970. My husband Dave and I took an overnight military personnel train from Frankfurt to Berlin and were stopped at the border in the middle of the night to have dogs check under the train.

That next morning, we took a bus tour through Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlinโ€”Dave had to wear his uniform there. We remember it as rainy and gray with no cars and just a handful of very sad-looking people walking around.

We took this picture to always remember that surreal moment and to bring a bit of color to town with my red umbrella.
