The House of Terror: remembering the unspeakable

on Wed, 05/09/2012 - 10:17
House of Terror, history, Budapest, Fascism, Stalinism, Communism

"Behind the Iron Curtain" is a phrase familiar to Americans past the age of 40.  Any trip into the Untours of Prague or Budapest  will surely stir up those blunted, but not forgotten, images. Yet today, Budapest, with its broad boulevards and luxurious spas, often dubbed the little Paris of central Europe, seems a far cry from that grim image.

How then does a visitor reconcile the two versions?  Central Europe is into its third decade of non-Communist rule.  It would be more pleasant, perhaps, to celebrate its Renaissance, and ignore the darker decades.

Jean and Jim Hall: Untourists of the Week

on Mon, 05/07/2012 - 09:35
Prague, Untours,
This week we depart from our normal question and answer format to let the Halls tell you about their trip in their own words.

In June of 2011 my husband and I took a Prague/Vienna Untour, and were very happy with the whole Untours approach.

The best thing was the accomodations!

In Prague we stayed at VLASSKA, a second story apartment in the Mala Strana.  The location was optimal:  far enough into the Mala Strana so that quiet reigned; near enough to the Charles Bridge to get there in 5 minutes.  Around the corner was a church that offered frequent, inexpensive, excellent concerts.

Untours Featured Property: Vlasska

Mala Strana, Lesser Town, Prague, Czech Repbulic across Vltava River

Not only is it filled with rich history, beautiful architecture and cool jazz, but Prague is also a very safe city - one of the 50 safest in the world!

But, don't just take our word for it, take it from someone who has been to Prague and stayed in the Vlasska apartment. Untourist Elgenia Ross has this to say about her experience there:

"Prague was a wonderful experience. We walked everywhere...from the castle and Petrin Hill to the Charles Bridge. We felt safe walking, even at night."

Being turned into lovely mush....the spa culture of Budapest

The unforgettable Szechenyi public baths in Budapest

The spa culture -- going to a hot spring to relax --  has been in place in Budapest for millennia. The word spa is often said to derive from the Latin words “Sanitas Per Aquam” which means healing through water.  Located on the Danube, at the start of the Buda hills, Budapest, Hungary's capitol, is the site of an astonishing 130 separate hot springs.  Archeological digs have found dozens of Celtic sites of activity around the springs.

If you've been reading this blog, you probably know that we're covering Untours regions on a monthly basis. And, as today is the 1st of May, we're starting a new region: Eastern Europe, which, for the purposes of this month's blog, is comprised of Prague and Budapest.

And, if you've been reading this blog, you probably know this about me: I love funiculars.

Fran & Francy Douglas: a "Swiss Untour" dynasty

Swiss Untour
The Douglas Dynasty (l to r., Carey Breon, Francy Douglas-Breon, Fran &  Doug Douglas

In place of our normal Untourist of the week profile, I'd like to introduce you to the heart and soul of the Swiss Untour program.  Francy Douglas (2nd from left, above) has worked here at Untours for 20 years.  She is team leader for the Swiss Untour and, along with a deep love of Switzerland, she bring something else to the job.  More than any other person here, except perhaps for Hal Taussig, Untours founder, she treats customers as if they are family.

That may have to do with how she was raised, and who
