My Paris Journal: Part 1

on Tue, 08/09/2016 - 13:19
Father Tom Lumpkin is a tireless advocate for the poor in Detroit. He is a quiet community hero, and was a perfect choice for our Untours Giveaway. Read about his good works here. He and his sister traveled to Paris with us on a free Untour, our small thank you to a man who has helped so many in his community. Here is the first half of his Paris journal.

What follows is a petit journal of my Paris trip. A five-star thanks to the Untours folks for making it possible. Words cannot express my appreciation!

Mountains and Music: Q & A with our Salzburg staffer, Vera

on Mon, 08/01/2016 - 17:13
Vera and guests on the Austria Untour in Salzburg

The hills are alive, with the sound of music! You've seen the movie, but do you know about the lovely city of Salzburg that the film took place in? Firstly, most locals aren't wearing clothing made from curtains, but there is an amazing presence of history, art, music, and nature. It's a smaller city that allows Untourists to take it in piece by piece, without being overwhelming. Curious to learn more about this Untours location? We talked with our local guide, Vera, about why Salzburg is fantastic and what Untourists can look forward to seeing and experiencing! (She's the one on the right in

Scotland's Dramatic Landscapes, Captured by Photographer Glen McClure

on Tue, 07/26/2016 - 17:14
Scotland Untours
When we first announced our new Scotland Untour, we were inundated by emails from new and seasoned Untourists expressing their enthusiasm for our choice and their love of Scotland.

One of my favorite emails came from one of my favorite clients, Glen McClure. Regular readers of our blog know Glen as an amazing photographer and have enjoyed reading about his travels in France and Italy with Untours.

His portraits of local people, many shot on Untours, provide a vivid window into the soul of the countries and cultures he visits.

12 Things You Must Taste in Venice: A Guide to Happy Hour and Dining

on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 17:09
Eating is one of my favorite parts of living; it informs my travels and even my choices of destinations. Italy would have been top of list even if I hadn't been fortunate enough to work on our Untours there. Over my years with Untours, I have spent a lot of time there, working and eating. Snacking and dining and drinking. Following food trends and sampling the dishes that go back centuries.

Here is the first in a series of food reports. The photo above is of me with my husband at a favorite haunt on Campo San Giacomo dall’Orio for happy hour.

A Parisian Secret: Musee de l'Orangeries

on Wed, 07/13/2016 - 13:52
Paris Untour arts

When most people travel to Paris they have a top-10 list including the usual suspects: Musee D'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and maybe even Versailles. On my most recent trip to Paris I thought, I've been there, done that, what else can I go see?! After some online searching I came across a darling museum, the Musee de l'Orangerie, a small art gallery featuring impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. Located near the Tuileries Gardens, it was central, and seemed to have a great collection of pieces, so I decided to check it out one afternoon.

Hal Taussig on Community, Clotheslines, and the Ties That Bind

on Mon, 06/27/2016 - 17:20
Clotheslines and community
This is a piece that Hal Taussig, our late founder, published on the Untours Cafe back in 2007. I think this captures the man and his values so well.

El Kover and her husband Bill, some well loved Untourists, recently spent a couple of days in Media, PA where our offices are. We had invited them to come to witness The Today Show filming. Today, I want to thank El for being such an observant and thoughtful person.

On her first visit to our house she noticed the clothesline running from our second floor balcony.

On the Road: Jackie's Irish Adventures

on Tue, 06/21/2016 - 09:43

This past spring Untourist Jackie Johnson spent two weeks exploring the gorgeous Irish countryside. With her sister Vicky and cousins, Jackie saw the best of Kenmare, Killarney, and drove the Ring of Kerry. They stayed in the central two-story townhouse, Packie's Corner, in Kenmare, which served as a great home-base for all their exploring. Interested in your own Irish adventure? See all the possibilities here!

Here are some highlights from their fantastic journey, complete with their own captions.

An Untour for All Ages: Scotland for the Young and Young at Heart

on Mon, 06/13/2016 - 10:10
It can be difficult to find a travel destination that suits everyone’s needs: grandparents, parents, kids, and young adults. As your kids get older, their interests change and what defines a great destination shifts with it. Finding a country where the locals are warm, the museums are a plenty, but there are also quirky other things to do is key to an interesting trip for all involved, across generations.

I’ve traveled across much of Europe throughout my university years and I still believe that Scotland is one of the best places to travel with kids of every age, including the young adults
