Alsace’s Landscape: Vineyards and Villages, the Wine Route

on Mon, 01/11/2016 - 16:06
Beblenheim and it vineyards on an Alsace Untour
This is Part 1 of a series on Alsace by author and loyal Untourist Sandra Kohler. She spent two week in Alsace recently with Walter Hagenbuch, who has shot all of the accompanying photos in her series. Enjoy the first installment.
Alsace’s vistas were reminiscent of Umbria or Tuscany, yet different – the hillsides with their lush green stretches that look like pasture, their blocks of differently patterned and colored green, the vineyards with their rows at angles to each other, the distant vista of  steep hills, mountains - Les Vosges.

Ireland's Ring of Kerry, Part 1: Forts, Waterfalls, Forests, and Estates

on Tue, 01/05/2016 - 12:17
Views from the Ring of Kerry, on the Ireland Untour

You may have never heard of the Iveragh Peninsula, but you’ve surely heard of the Ring of Kerry, and that is the scenic driving trail that traces the best vistas of this lovely coastline. But some of the peninsula’s finest treasures are off of the main road. Here is a rundown of the peninsula, with access based on your use of a rental car. Our write-up is oriented for access from Kenmare, charming homebase of the Ireland Untour. We advise you to pace yourself and stop often to enjoy the views.

B Corporation retreat

With the B Certification, I as a consumer can know that I'm buying from a company that is working to do more than maximize profits. B Corporations are also about making the world a fairer, cleaner, and happier place. As a business motivated by more than profits, we can communicate our values and practices to our customers by displaying the B logo. We're proud to be in the company of firms like Ben & Jerry's, Patagonia, King Arthur Flour, and Kickstarter.

First Person Account: Paris, Without Fear

on Wed, 12/09/2015 - 15:18
Paris without fear
This piece was written by Kim Paschen who worked for Untours for many years, coordinating French Untours and then as Marketing Director. She recently returned from Paris and reports on the city she found in the gap between the November terrorist attacks and the international climate talks.
Friday, November 13. I won’t forget where I was when I first heard the breaking news of the Paris attacks.

Live or Recorded? A Swiss Fairy Tale of Simple Pleasure

on Mon, 12/07/2015 - 11:06
The Kovers on a Swiss Untour

This really happened. It seemed like a fairy tale. But it is a true story. It was during our Swiss Heartland Untour in 2004. We had decided to spend the day in Brienz. It was a beautiful sunny day. The lady in the Tourist Information Office suggested that we take a walk in the older section of town. The streets were empty. We had the scenery all to ourselves.

At the corner of Krummgasse and Oberdorfstrasse, the voices of a ladies choir were drifting out of a nearby open window. We sat down on a nearby bench and listened. Eleanor suggested that someone must be playing a recording.

The Best of Germany's Christmas Markets

on Tue, 12/01/2015 - 11:25
Germany Christmas market with family

I miss certain things about my homeland, but Christmas markets & Advent celebrations top the list. It’s a magical time in Germany. On Sunday afternoons families assemble around an Advent wreath, light a candle, and enjoy special treats like Stollen, Lebkuchen, and cookies with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. Incense fills the air, coming out of the mouths of Räuchermännchen (little wooden men with an incense cone on the hollow inside that blow smoke out of their pipes), and soft Christmas carols can be heard in many a home.

To Greece with Love (and Music!)

on Mon, 11/23/2015 - 15:46
The Greece Untour in Napflio
One of my favorite Untours is our Greece Untour, with vacation rental apartments set in lovely historic Nafplio. The old town is picturesque and charming, its narrow alleys lined with flower boxes and its squares and promenades filled with cafe tables and restaurants. A beautiful seafront offers sweeping views, and a Venetian fortress looms high above. The town is at once cosmopolitan and invitingly cozy and friendly.
And the day trips beyond it are astounding, from Epidaurus to Mystra, Athens to Mycenae, Corinth to the islands. All of the Peloponnese is your oyster.

40 Years of Untours: A Video Tribute!

on Thu, 11/19/2015 - 09:52
Hal on a Swiss Untour

Happy Birthday to us! It is hard to believe we have been around for 40 years. So much has changed in the world in that time, but one thing remains true: Those who seek cross-cultural understanding and honest, earnest experiences in the heart of the culture are richly rewarded as travelers. We are proud to have been pioneers in the travel-like-a-local movement, and we are happy the idea has caught on.

More than anything, we are grateful to all of those who have shared our vision over the last four decades and helped spread the word.

8 Reasons Ireland is the Perfect Family Destination

on Wed, 11/11/2015 - 09:51
Killarney National Park on an Ireland Untour
Simply put, Ireland is the perfect destination for family travel! I discovered this in June, when my husband and I took our 6-year-old son to Ireland for two weeks. While some destinations in Europe are all about museums, architecture, and culture, Ireland offers a broad diversity of things to do, with castles, farms, and outdoor adventures tailored to a young boy’s passions!
The question is not if we will return to Ireland, but when. The next time we will bring my parents, and Ireland would make the perfect spot for a multigenerational trip. Country Kerry is the ideal homebase.
