Meet Hundertwasser's Whimsical Vienna

on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 11:36
There are so many reasons to love the arts and architecture in Vienna! The city has had a reputation for interesting architecture since the completion of the Ring in 1865.
The Hundertwasser House is a great place to start! Innovative Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser has enraged and delighted an equal number of Viennese with the city-subsidized construction of a low-income apartment complex on the corner of Löwengasse and Kegelgasse.
His building (photographed above) was completed in 1985. It was designed to bring city dwellers closer to nature.

Toasting Vienna: A Guide to Austrian Wines

on Mon, 10/09/2017 - 17:00
A guide to Austrian wines
Though it is not well known for its viticulture, Austria produces excellent white wines and increasing good red ones. Vienna itself is a wine-growing region, surrounded by vineyards which supply the Heurige (see below) in the city and the outskirts with young local wines.
The most popular and wine in Austria is fruity, food-friendly Grüner Veltliner. Others options include superb dry Rieslings, especially from the Wachau region, and rich Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) from Burgenland.
Austrian reds tend to be soft and lush; robust reds come from the Blaufränkisch grape from the Burgenland

Austria is still one of the most underrated countries in Europe. Home to Mozart, Sigmund Freud and the Von Trapps, Austria is argued to have some of the richest art, music and cultural history.

Rebecca Goodspeed, Untourist of the Week: Castle hunting with her son

on Fri, 10/31/2014 - 09:52

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour and why you chose to go there?

My son and I did one week on the Rhine and one week at the Castle in Germany and one week in Salzburg in Austria. Our most exciting thing we wanted to see was Neuschwanstein Castle and I wanted to return to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Rhine area, and Salzburg as I had been to each of these places years ago.

2. What is your favorite Untours memory?

Approaching Neuschwanstein Castle on the road through the mountains was unforgettable.

Jean and William Tarr, Untourists of the Week, love the "small village" experience

on Tue, 04/29/2014 - 09:56
Untourists Jean and William Tarr share their experience with Untours in Umbria and Vienna

We arranged a visit to Bettona, Umbria, in Italy for one week and then to Vienna for the second week. We needed to make our own air arrangements but it was easy enough to do. We loved being in the hilltop village with access to Assisi and Perugia. We had coffee in the square every morning and read the newspapers. The village is small and charming. We had good help from Untours.

And the Unny winners are...

Untourist Ron Anderson captures a great vineyard shot from his Tuscany Untour

As you may know, we had the inaugural Unny Awards just recently. These awards are our way of recognizing the regions which have welcomed Untours all these years.

The Unnies are fun and lighthearted and that's how we like things around here.

We like to think of them as the Oscars® for Untours, though I admit we can't top the touching, heartfelt acceptance speech by Lupita Nyong'o last night.
