Foundation Fridays: Hal Turns 89!

on Fri, 01/10/2014 - 10:11
Untours founder Hal Taussig celebrates his birthday with Untours staff in Media, PA

Along with the winter solstice and the New Year, there was Hal's 89th birthday! Nothing like an office birthday party with cake, laughs, and plenty of hugs to go around with our fearless leader and visionary.

Foundation Fridays: Fair Trade Shopping

on Fri, 11/22/2013 - 10:15
Here's a welcoming member of the CONACADO community, where the water project was completed.

In addition to lots of good things, like children going to school and land farmed sustainably, Fair Trade requires Fair Trade importers to pay farmers a "premium" at the end of the growing season. Fair Trade farmers then decide as a community how to spend the premium often investing in schools and health clinics.

African family using Brightbox

We are delighted—or perhaps re-lighted!—to be invested in One Degree Solar, producers of “BrightBox,” the best solar light and small appliance recharger we have yet seen.

Foundation Fridays: It’s All About Me

on Fri, 11/08/2013 - 10:34
Since I failed to capture Alan's edible landscape on film, here's my mom, Chris Killough (Untourist and foundation donor!), in one of her favorite edible landscapes: her community garden.

Well, actually, just a few paragraphs are. Our friends at SosteNica featured the Untours Foundation and me in their fall newsletter. Find us on pages 2 & 3.

Foundation Fridays: Calling All Rotarians

on Fri, 11/01/2013 - 10:21
North Carolina's North Durham Rotary Club sells Fair Trade coffee just like Pennsylvania's Media Rotary Club does

The current focus areas of The Rotary Foundation are a close fit to the principles of Fair Trade. Rotary’s foci are the following:

  • Promoting peace
  • Fighting disease
  • Providing clean water
  • Saving mothers and children
  • Supporting education
  • Growing local economies

The principles and rules of Fair Trade are simply means to the ends of the Rotary's foci, such as these:

  • Women must be part of decision making
  • Children must go to school

Foundation Fridays: Day-cation

on Fri, 10/18/2013 - 09:30
Zoomin' around Central Park

So, what does one of Hal’s employees do on her day off in New York City?

What else? Bike riding! And what better place than Central Park.

Foundation Fridays: Sisterly Love

on Fri, 10/11/2013 - 10:15
Sister Helen Prejean and Untours Foundation manager Elizabeth Killough

Witness to Innocence (WTI), which received a bridge loan from our foundation last year, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. WTI empowers death row survivors, whose convictions have been overturned, and their loved ones to be effective leaders in abolishing the death penalty.

I attended WTI anniversary festivities this week meeting the fiery, feisty, fearless, and friendly keynote speaker, Sister Helen Prejean. Best known for her book, Dead Man Walking – which was turned into the film by the same name – Sister Helen works relentlessly to end the death penalty worldwide. Co-founding WTI is one of her many actions in this journey.

Foundation Fridays: Perks!

on Fri, 10/04/2013 - 10:53
Here's Elizabeth's new Tosheka Designs purse!

So, what are the perks for our foundation’s loan recipients? Technical assistance and a cheerleading squad at every turn – like it or not!

Last week I wore the cheerleader hat and spoke at the Philadelphia Convention Center on behalf of Tosheka Designs, which continues to train and hire 400 women in Kenya to make purses out of recycled plastic bags, natural fibers, and/or leather. (Personally, I’m in vegan heaven with their gorgeous non-leather bags!)

Foundation Fridays: A World Citizen

on Fri, 09/27/2013 - 09:51

Hal is all about getting to know others and their cultures for the sheer fun of it and also so that we have more incentive and understanding to live peacefully. Hence, the idea behind Untours.

Foundation Fridays: One That Got Away!

on Fri, 09/06/2013 - 09:38
Acclaimed film Future Weather was filmed around the corner from Untours Foundation manager Elizabeth Killough's house

We receive lots of requests for support at the foundation. Most requests just aren’t green enough or don’t generate employment among vulnerable populations.

And then there are those projects that we really do want to invest in, but they, too, don’t quite fit our model. One was a film called “Future Weather” by Jenny Deller. It’s a lovely coming of age film with an underlying theme of climate change.
