Aimee with some Fresh Artists

Our guest blogger this week, Aimee Ralph, is the wonderful intern for our Fair Trade Committee here in our hometown of Media, PA. She's a Corporate Communications major with a minor in Civic and Community Engagement at Penn State Brandywine. She’s also an intern at the National MS Society in Philadelphia. She hopes to have a job with a non-profit soon after her upcoming May graduation. Keep this dynamo in mind!

Heeeeeere's Aimee..........

Foundation Fridays: Greener living with Green America

on Fri, 02/22/2013 - 09:48
Our worms are busy dining inside this composter. Note the red stop sign above the composter! This alerts humans that the worms have too much food, and no additional food is needed at this time.

While our foundation invests in green businesses, we at the Untours office try to walk lighter and greener on the planet. Worms compost our veggie scraps in our kitchen, solar panels generate a lot of our electricity, and we turn to places like Green America to give us guidance on easing up on our carbon footprints. Here’s a Green America sampling:

Foundation Fridays: The money trail

Kirk Bloodsworth, exonerated death row inmate and Advocacy Director for Witness to Innocence.

Hal believes that money – and people for that matter! – should be working most of the time. So, when the foundation has funds waiting in the bank for a promised start date of a loan, we look for interim places to put those funds, where they can do some good work.

Foundation Fridays: What we do at recess

Here's dynamic Penn State senior, feminist, and blogger, Labanya Mookerjee

When Hal suggested in 2005 that we make our hometown of Media, PA, a Fair Trade town, I responded by laughing! But alas, it proved to be an idea whose time had come. Media was ready for that vision and 23 towns and cities from Boston to San Francisco have followed suit.

Foundation Fridays: Who's on First?

Here's a glimpse of our own Brian Taussig-Lux, Untours General Manager, third from the left in the back row, with other Benefit Corporation leaders and elected officials.

Pennsylvania is the 12th state to make “benefit corporations” a legal entity. These corporations are required by law to create general benefit for society, which includes shareholders, employees, the community at large, and the environment. Of course, rigourous third party standards are part of this.

Untours has been a benefit corporation since 2007 when B Lab began certifying corporations before there was legislation. As you’ve heard before, Untours is the first B Corp in the world!

Faktum Hotels is changing the way you think about homelessness

As you may know, this year we've expanded our Foundation Fridays posts to include more than just news & updates about the Untours Foundation. As Marilee already explained earlier, we will continue to include exciting news about the Foundation but will also have broader posts about things like our concern for the environment, cultural understanding and socially responsible business practices. That being said, here's a bit of a broader post, with a nice little segue (my opinion, of course) from a little about the Foundation.

At the Untours Foundation, we support

Foundation Fridays: Separated at birth?

Uruguay President Jose Mujica celebrates winning presidential run-off election in 2009

Until recently, I thought that Hal was one of a kind, but a recent BBC report has given me pause. I now suspect that Hal and Uruguayan President Jose Mujica were separated at birth.

Foundation Fridays: You saw it here first!

Untours founder Hal Taussig in a tie(!) with (left to right) Untours Foundation manager Elizabeth Killough and Foundation board members Mary LeFever and Tom Hibberd

Hal shocked many of us by showing up at a holiday event wearing a tie! Even Hal’s student of 50 years ago, Tom Hibberd, AND long time friend, Mary LeFever, had never seen Hal in a tie before. Wonders never cease!

Happy New Year!
