Foundation Fridays: The Slave Trade

on Fri, 04/13/2012 - 09:47
Untours Blog Foundation Fridays - You can help fight the slave trade

I met Carol Metzker through the generous Trust Committee of her Quaker Meeting, Willistown Friends Meeting, which recently granted funds to our Fair Trade committee for educational materials. Carol is a writer, frequent speaker and coauthor of the book, Appreciative Intelligence: Seeing the Mighty Oak in the Acorn. An encounter with an 11-year-old girl rescued from slavery sparked her quest and projects to help survivors of modern slavery.

Here are Carol's words..............

Foundation Fridays: Meet Norma Taussig!

on Fri, 04/06/2012 - 09:52
Untours co-founders, Norma and Hal Taussig

Norma Lee Black met a young Hal Taussig at the First Baptist Church in Amarillo, Texas, when she was 22.  They married and have taken decades of adventures together from ranching in Colorado to working at Untours. In 1993, Norma and Hal founded the Untours Foundation as a way to channel Untours profits to those in financial need. Norma is often in Hal’s shadow, but make no mistake, she is a beautiful force of nature in her own right!

Here’s more on Norma:

Last splurge:  Paying all my debts and being able to not worry about future indebtedness.

Foundation Fridays: Poet's Corner

on Fri, 03/30/2012 - 10:03
Harry LeFever, poet from Media, PA wrote a poem about dementia

Foundation board member and theater enthusiast, Tom Hibberd, took some of us out last night to see Bruce Graham's most recent play, "The Outgoing Tide". With unexpected humor, the play spotlights a family dealing with Alzheimer’s.

The experience reminded me of the following beautiful and haunting poem by Harry LeFever, who wrote about the dementia that eventually took his life. Harry was a dear friend of Hal and Norma's and was husband to foundation board member, Mary LeFever. He is dearly missed, and we are so grateful for his words.

Foundation Fridays: Meet Tom Hibberd!

on Fri, 03/23/2012 - 10:02
Untours Foundation Board Member Tom Hibberd presenting an award to Fox 29's Sue Serio, on behalf of the Media Theatre

What Tom likes most about the foundation is its "uniquely optimistic idealism and heartfelt empathy."  Tom was and is a powerful force in our Fair Trade work keeping us moving at fast speed. He is Mr. Enthusiasm, for which we are most grateful every single day! Counter to what he writes below, he is indeed very cool! Here's more on Tom:

Mission statement:  To live a full life without too many regrets and very few "coulda, woulda, shouldas", appreciative of the opportunities afforded me. I want the epitaph to reflect that I knew how to live, enjoy life, and did so with enthusiasm.

Foundation Fridays: Meet Andy Paminger!

on Fri, 03/16/2012 - 09:45
Untours Foundation Board Member Andy Paminger

Andy Paminger got to know Hal and Norma Taussig in 2010 when he began working as the Marketing Director at Untours. Personal circumstances pulled him back to Boston in 2011, but when asked to join the Untours Foundation board – and take on a long board meeting commute! – he graciously said Yes! It was a tough decision for Andy to leave Untours, but we’ve softened the blow – for all of us – by having him on our board. Andy appreciates that the foundation focuses on helping impoverished individuals help themselves. Here’s an introduction to Andy:

Childhood ambition: To travel the world

Indulgence:  Chocolate

Foundation Fridays: "B" is for Benefit

on Fri, 03/09/2012 - 09:23
Untours Founder Hal Taussig with B Lab Founders Jay Coen Gilbert and Bart Houlahan

One of our aims at the Untours Foundation is to invest in businesses with great values, that give back, and that don’t "take" to begin with. Using the Hal Taussig perspective, we live in the positive looking for wins for all involved including business owners themselves, vulnerable populations that need jobs, the earth, shareholders, customers, neighbors of businesses, etc.

Foundation Fridays: Meet Mary LeFever!

on Fri, 03/02/2012 - 09:34
Untours Foundation Board Member Mary LeFever with Untours Founder Hal Taussig.

All of our foundation board members are amazing, of course, and that includes Mary LeFever, who first met Hal and Norma when her husband, Harry, taught with Hal at Springfield High School in southeastern Pennsylvania. When Hal and Norma formed the Untours Foundation in 1993, they asked Mary to be a founding board member. Mary appreciates how the foundation provides low-interest loans to entrepreneurial individuals or groups, who would not otherwise qualify for loans.

Here’s more on Mary……..

Most unusual gift received:  $1,500 from Norma & Hal Taussig to found The Walden School which is 45 years old this year!

Foundation Fridays: Hal and a young boy's terror.............

on Fri, 02/24/2012 - 10:35
Hal Taussig, Untours founder, as a young boy with his brother, Warren, father of Untours' General Manager Brian Taussig-Lux

Hal grew up in an evangelical Christian family that believed in "the Rapture." He tried hard to share his family's beliefs, but couldn't. When he was about 13 years old and found himself alone milking the cows, he thought the Rapture had happened and that he was indeed left behind. Terror struck him. He ran faster then he ever had back to his house and found his family at the kitchen table. All was least for the moment.

Dear friend Dee Dee Risher reflected on this experience of Hal's, and wrote him the following poem 7 years ago.

Foundation Fridays: Let the River Run..........

on Fri, 02/17/2012 - 09:41

Lots of our work at the Untours Foundation is about clean water.  And what about those of us in the Global North, who have plenty of water? (I do realize that more and more of us in the North don't in fact have enough!) What can we do to help the problem in addition to using less water and giving money toward clean water projects? Harvest our rain water.
