Feeling like a local, freedom to travel like you want, even if you get lost! I also love the onsite support and that Untours helps make sure that you have everything that you need.

Timelapse of the Week: Alsace

on Mon, 07/21/2014 - 10:15

Get ready to be captivated by Alsace, the "crossroads of Europe," in this excellent timelapse video. From Christmas markets and half-timbered houses to urban centers and rural vistas, it really gives you a wonderful picture of all that Alsace has to offer.

Robert & Cheryl Beymer, Untourists of the Week: France, 50 years in the making

on Tue, 07/08/2014 - 09:27

We appreciate the opportunity to live like locals in residential neighborhoods rather than in hotels catering to tourists. Having the security of knowing there is someone nearby in case of emergency is also reassuring. When there is a problem (as we had most recently in France, due to the air traffic controllers strike) we are grateful to have the assistance of the Untours staff (help with last-minute flight arrangements to replace the flight that was canceled, and being greeted at the Marseilles airport late at night after being delayed in Amsterdam for eight hours, then escorted at midnight directly to our apartment).

And the Unny winners are...

As you may know, we had the inaugural Unny Awards just recently. These awards are our way of recognizing the regions which have welcomed Untours all these years.

The Unnies are fun and lighthearted and that's how we like things around here.

We like to think of them as the Oscars® for Untours, though I admit we can't top the touching, heartfelt acceptance speech by Lupita Nyong'o last night.

Here come the Unny Awards!

on Sun, 02/23/2014 - 16:03
Untours hosts the first annual Unny Awards, a celebration of the regions it serves

Since I started working here way back in 2011, the Untours regions have been calling on me to give them some attention. Actually, not just attention, but distinction.

Now, I know they are all big enough to speak for themselves. They don't need you to tell them they're great; we all already know that.

What they really need is for you tell them where they excel.

That's why today, a week before the Oscars®, we're introducing the Unny Awards—a way for you to help us celebrate our regions and give them the recognition they truly deserve.

Ray and Lillian Nagle, Untourists of the Week, do a French triple play!

Ray...in you-know-where

3. What is your favorite Untours memory?

As it has always been with our previous Untours (Switzerland Heartland twice and Andalusia, Spain), our favorite memory has not been seeing the "big-name" sights, but our interactions with local people. On this Untour, ONE of our favorite memories was "getting lost in Alsace" as our Untour staffer suggested. After visiting the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, we detoured (this is the lost part) on our way home through the little town of Kintzheim where we stopped for lunch at the Auberge Armories d'Alsace restaurant. The food was excellent and we were the only Americans there in the non-touristy town. This is why we do Untours—so we can experience what it's like to live in a country and not just pass through it.

Quickie Quiz: Alsace or Provence

on Wed, 12/11/2013 - 10:17

Our Untourists of the Week, James & Bridget Joy, couldn't choose between Provence and Alsace, two regions of France that are very different! Could you choose? (They solved the dilemma with a Provence-Alsace sampler.)

Which would you pick (if you had to!)?

James & Bridget Joy, Untourists of the Week: Alsace + Provence + Niece!

on Tue, 12/10/2013 - 11:52
Untourists James and Bridget Joy bring their niece on a 3-week Untour in Provence and Alsace

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

In September, 2010, Bridget and I and our niece Elizabeth Murphy went to Pernes-les-Fontaines in Provence for two weeks and drove to Ribeauvillé in Alsace for the wine harvest during the third week.

2. Why did you choose to go there?

Our love of France (two weeks with Untours in Paris 2004) and the desire to see ancient Roman remains in the muted colors of autumnal Provence, especially Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Nimes, Pont du Gard, Orange, and Vaison-la-Romaine. And the contrast with Alsace!

3. What is your favorite Untours memory?

Amy & Laurie Calhoun, the Sisterhood of Traveling Untourists - Our Untourists the Week

Untours, Untourists
Amy & Laurie are sisters who travel together a lot. The photo is of Amy and the words are Laurie's.

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

Our most recent trip was to Provence, though we've been there twice and cannot wait to return for a third time! This is one of the wonderful aspects of Untours: instead of going to ten cities in five days, you learn to slow down and focus deeply. Much like the slow food movement, Untours encourages slow travel, and it is a valuable concept to adopt.

Untourists of the Week: Elsa and Raymond Heald

Raymond Heald, Untours

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

It was a dream vacation: 8 days on the Variety Voyager, the sleek 73-passenger yacht that put us ashore at the fabled ports of Capri, Lipari, Malta, plus 4 ports in Sicily. Then, a train ride to the sparkling Cinque Terre for 4 nights and a heavenly 2 weeks in the fabulous Bonalumi apartment in Locarno, with a breathtaking view of Lake Maggiore.
