How a Childhood Trip to Europe Shaped Who I've Become

Sonia and family at Versailles

Throughout my travels, I have learned that despite cultural and language barriers, candid kindness really is universal, that all efforts - whether big or small - are appreciated, and that a smile and open attitude are all you need to open doors. So my advice to you this holiday season is to get out there, try something different, meet new people, and bring your kids! You could be shaping their future.

Robert & Cheryl Beymer, Untourists of the Week: France, 50 years in the making

on Tue, 07/08/2014 - 09:27

We appreciate the opportunity to live like locals in residential neighborhoods rather than in hotels catering to tourists. Having the security of knowing there is someone nearby in case of emergency is also reassuring. When there is a problem (as we had most recently in France, due to the air traffic controllers strike) we are grateful to have the assistance of the Untours staff (help with last-minute flight arrangements to replace the flight that was canceled, and being greeted at the Marseilles airport late at night after being delayed in Amsterdam for eight hours, then escorted at midnight directly to our apartment).

Phil and Jane King, Untourists of the Week: Kids relive first trip to Switzerland

on Tue, 07/01/2014 - 09:17
Untourists Jane and Phil King share memories from their Untours in France and Switzerland

You have knowledgeable support staff on site to help if needed and you are provided with tons of ideas for things to see and do in your home area. Unlike a tour, however, the choice is up to you. You get to pick and choose what you want to see and do and when. No need to be on a bus with 40 other people at 7:30 in the morning. No packing and unpacking. No need to go with a group to a woolen mill when you would rather visit a museum. In fact, your schedule is your own to see and do what you want when you want. It is like living like the locals rather than being on a trip.

Timelapse of the week: Paris

Untourist Thomas Buckhout took this beautiful shot at Jardins du Luxembourg while on a Paris Untour

You may or may not know that I am simply in love with timelapse videos of my favorite travel destinations. I actually didn't know I was until I came across this one last year. Since then, I've been consuming them at an alarming rate. I thought you may be interested in seeing them as well, so I'll be sharing as many as I can find with you. I hope you enjoy them.

Diane and Lawrence Brenner (Untourists of the Week) ...the more Untours the merrier.

on Wed, 03/19/2014 - 10:07
Untourists Diane and Lawrence Brenner share a bit about their Untours in Florence, Paris and Leiden

When we were in Florence in 1970, all the museums were closed for civil service strikes, so we wanted to see everything we missed. Without Mary Jane's help we'd have never poked around the south side of the Arno, nor figured out how to take the bus to Fiesole to see the Roman ruins.

Untourists of the Week: Patricia Arno and grandson Patrick do Paris

on Tue, 03/11/2014 - 10:15
Untourist Patricia Arno shares a bit about her Paris Untour with her grandson Patrick

Patrick chose Paris as his "trip with Nama" because he said it was historical. I think he chose it because I love the city. We saw more of Paris in one week than most people see in a life time.

And the Unny winners are...

Untourist Ron Anderson captures a great vineyard shot from his Tuscany Untour

As you may know, we had the inaugural Unny Awards just recently. These awards are our way of recognizing the regions which have welcomed Untours all these years.

The Unnies are fun and lighthearted and that's how we like things around here.

We like to think of them as the Oscars® for Untours, though I admit we can't top the touching, heartfelt acceptance speech by Lupita Nyong'o last night.

Here come the Unny Awards!

on Sun, 02/23/2014 - 16:03
Untours hosts the first annual Unny Awards, a celebration of the regions it serves

Since I started working here way back in 2011, the Untours regions have been calling on me to give them some attention. Actually, not just attention, but distinction.

Now, I know they are all big enough to speak for themselves. They don't need you to tell them they're great; we all already know that.

What they really need is for you tell them where they excel.

That's why today, a week before the Oscars®, we're introducing the Unny Awards—a way for you to help us celebrate our regions and give them the recognition they truly deserve.
