Mystras, Greece

Mystras on a Greece Untour
Greece is one of our most beloved Untours, largely because of the great diversity of things to do right in and around Nafplio. But there is nothing like hitting the open road and enjoying the countryside as you make your way to some of the farther flung corners of the Peloponnese.
On the outer edges of our day trip suggestions lies one of my favorite destinations, the historic ruins of Byzantium’s second capital, Mystras.

In the latter days of the Byzantine Empire, much of the Peloponnese was under Byzantine rule, and Mystras was a major seat of power—second in size and power only to

Meet Nafplio, Home of the Greece Untour

Nafplio Greece, home of our Greece Untour

We love Nafplio! This lovely ancient seaside town is the homebase of our Greece Untour and offers the perfect combination of charm, sophistication, views and access to the wider Peloponnese.

Nafplio has a population of 12,000, and is considered by many to be Greece’s prettiest town. It is located only two hours south of Athens on the Peloponnesian Peninsula. Nestled into a quiet bay, Nafplio makes a perfect base for exploring some of the most historic and scenic sections of Greece.
Its old town is compact and can be crossed on foot in about 10 minutes.

To Greece Again, an Untourist's Homecoming

Looking down on the sea, Greece Untour
In 2013 Steve Somerville returned to Greece for his second Untour there. He has enjoyed many Untour destinations over the years. Here is his account of Greece the second time around, along with some of his photos from the trip.
Not long ago, my friend Lynne and I returned to Nafplio, Greece, for our second Greek Untour.  We stayed in the Poppy apartment on St. George's Square. We returned to Nafplio because we realized that we had much more to see even though we had spent two weeks there in 2009. We also wanted to revisit one site seen previously, Epidaurus, just 35 minutes away.

To Greece with Love (and Music!)

The Greece Untour in Napflio
One of my favorite Untours is our Greece Untour, with vacation rental apartments set in lovely historic Nafplio. The old town is picturesque and charming, its narrow alleys lined with flower boxes and its squares and promenades filled with cafe tables and restaurants. A beautiful seafront offers sweeping views, and a Venetian fortress looms high above. The town is at once cosmopolitan and invitingly cozy and friendly.
And the day trips beyond it are astounding, from Epidaurus to Mystra, Athens to Mycenae, Corinth to the islands. All of the Peloponnese is your oyster.

Spiderman of Greece: Christos Saves the Day!

Christos saves the day on the Greece Untour

A favorite Untours memory comes from our Greece Untour, and a daring rescue. Some guests of ours in Nafplio were having trouble with their building lock. They called on Christos, our Untours host. He quickly jumped on his scooter and drove over to help. When his key did not work either, he tried to pick the lock, but without success. He went back to his office and got some tools. Back in St. Georges Square he climbed up on his scooter and scaled the wall, climbing up on the drain pipe and hanging on to the wires on the outside of the building, true Spiderman style.

The best of greece: towns, wineries and museums

When considering a vacation to Greece most tourists focus on the islands, and although they are gorgeous, many overlook the beauty that is mainland Greece. From Athens, Thessaloniki, and the Peloponnese, Greece is more than its islands. I’ve compiled a list of the top places to see across Greece, many of which I experienced during my 4 months there, some I have yet to conquer!

Untours painting Nafplio

Nestled in the heart of Greece with easy access to the Peloponnese, Nafplio is one of the most scenic villages in Greece. Known for its vibrant pink flowers, striking blue water, and ancient castles, Nafplio is every artist’s dream. With easy day trips to the island of Hydra and ancient cities such as Mycenae, Corinth and Delphi, Nafplio allows tourists the access every visitor dreams of while living like a local in the village-like city.

Recent Untourist, Ginny Abblett, was captured by the beautiful surroundings of Nafplio, inspired to take paint to canvas. Below are some of her outstanding pieces that capture the feeling and beauty of Nafplio, Greece.

Sonia on the Barcelona Untour

I feel lucky to work with a small but dedicated crew of globalists. Our staff is worldly, broad minded, and very well traveled. They've elevated my thinking, stoked my curiosity about new parts of the globe, and helped me grow into a citizen of the world. I recently asked them a simple question: What's your favorite Untour? Some of their answers surprised me. Below, read their responses, and my own two-part answer to what I actually found to be a very tough question.

Sonia (Specialist, France, Spain, the Americas): Since I haven't actually "done" any of our French Untours (I was there in

Hydra: Loving Cats and Life on the Greek Isles

The cats of Hydra, Greece Untour

The cats of Hydra, Greece. (Click for more adorable photos!)

One of the things I love about my husband is his love for animals. I had a few parakeets when growing up. One even talked! But I never had a cat or dog. It was Paul’s chubby and lovable gray and white tuxedo named Owen that conquered my heart overnight and turned me into a cat lover. As Owen was going into his senior years, we’d hire a cat sitter when we went away. Although I knew him to be in excellent hands, I missed him terribly and took every opportunity to connect with cats on my trips and snap photos. And then we went on a Greece Untour...
