Marcia and Oded on their three week adventure in their favorite place: Greece

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

We spent a little over 3 weeks in Greece - - in THE PERFECT LITTLE TOWN of Nafplion.  We had both been to Greece before several times, mostly separately and many, many years ago - but we wanted to really spend time in one area and get to know it the Untours way.  Oded is a Biblical archeologist - - so he really wanted to see the many terrific sites in the area, and I was ready for that a food, sun, water, art and ambiance.  Our first two weeks were spent in

Memories of an Untourist Artist in Greece: Ann Cockerill

Ann Cockerill's little boat that "begged to have it's portrait painted.'

From an answer Ann gave to a question someone on the Untours Cafe  asked here about the lovely paintings she makes while on Untours, and in this case, about this boat, that she found while on a Greek Untour.   We think it speaks very much to that spirit of philotimo...that we wrote about last week.  One definition of philotimo is " It is the feeling of not being able to “give back” enough."   The man that Ann meets in this story seems to embody this spirit, and if you could talk with many of our Greek Untourists, we

Mediterranean Diet & Greece: Where People Forget to Die

on Thu, 11/15/2012 - 12:30
Untours, Greece, Mediterranean Diet, NYTimes

A recent testament to the healthy properties of the Mediterranean Diet, specifically the Greek diet, has inspired us here at Untours.  (Read the entire article in last week's NY TImes magazine here: The Island Where People Forget to Die)

  • This article  profiles a Greek WWII veteran, Stamatis Moraitis,  who came to the US in 1943, seeking treatment for combat wounds, stayed, married a Greek-American girl and settled down. A typical story, you might say.  However,  in 1976, after growing short of breath, Moraitis was diagnosed with lung cancer, and given 9 months to live.

An Italian in Greece (and Istanbul...and finally in Italy)

on Tue, 11/13/2012 - 11:13
Untours Italy expert Andi Cancelliere shares the first leg of her 5-week trip to Greece, Istanbul then Italy

What is an Italo-phile like me to do when planning a vacation outside of Italy? Go to Greece! Prior to my overseas work assignment (more on that later), I planned on vacationing somewhere in Europe with a friend. After tossing around some ideas, we decided on visiting our Untours location in Nafplio, Greece. Now, don’t take this the wrong way, Italy will always be my number one, but Greece was fabulous.

Untourists of the Week: Enid & Bob Phreaner and their story of Christos as "Spiderman"

on Mon, 11/12/2012 - 14:15
Untours, Greece, Nafplio

Have you ever seen a face more likely to be someone you could make friends with?  This is Christos, and Enid and Bob happily got the chance to see just how handy a friend can be.

1. Our most recent Untour was two weeks of hiking, sightseeing and immersing ourselves in the beauty of the alps in Kuchl, Austria.  Particularly memorable was the rainy day we spent at the local thermal spa which was open to the general public.  It was like an indoor water park for adults!  But, probably our most fascinating Untour was to Nafplio where we explored the Peloponnese Peninsula.

Culture Clue: Philotimo: def. (through a non-Greek lens): CRAZY nice

Untourists & Christos's family, at their home for a dinner.  (that's me on the far right)

Many of our Greek Untourists comment on the extraordinary warmth of the Greek people they meet.  (To be clear, many Untourists comment on the warmth and friendliness of the people they meet on all their Untours.  We try to structure all Untours in a way that makes it easy to meet and interract warmly with local residents.)

But there's no doubt about it.  The Greeks have something special.  If I was being flippant, I would say the Greek people offer hospitality on steroids.

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?

"Fifteen years ago, I was so impressed with Untours that I wrote a letter to the New York Times travel editor and it was published. The things I liked enough to write about then have not changed; they’ve only gotten better."
