Ventures Cruise Report: Rhine Getaway on Viking

on Tue, 11/14/2017 - 12:53
Dee on a Viking cruise with Untours Ventures

Dee McConnell, Director of Untours Ventures, offers a review of her experience on a Viking river cruise of the Rhine. She also offers advice: Pace yourself since there is so much to do and see. Take the time to grab a seat on the sundeck with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. Also, bring binoculars. They’re helpful for getting a better look at all of the castles you will pass as your cruise the Rhine.

Holland vacation apartments on the Dutch Untour

Untourists Jerry and Deena Koffler have traveled with us at least 18 times, sometimes taking more than one trip per year. They are worldly, curious, and up for adventures, whether they find themselves combining Untours regions in a sampler or sailing off on far-flung adventures on an Untours Venture.

They recently shared their photos of Holland with us. This is the first is a series of photos I will share from Jerry's archive of travel photography, his impressions from his Dutch Untour in Leiden.

Spring Preview: Holland at the Philadelphia Flower Show

Holland at the Philadelphia Flower Show

Right around the time those of us on the East Coast are bemoaning the long, cold winter, the Philadelphia Flower Show launches with its colorful blooms promising good things to come. As the world's biggest and oldest indoor flower show, the Philadelphia Flower Show draws gardeners from all over the country.

Cathrin Baumbach, one of our program directors, volunteers there every year. As this year's theme was Holland, we feel compelled to share her photos. They are not as good as our Dutch Untour, but they are pretty and well timed.

5 Reasons to Book a Winter Getaway to Holland

on Tue, 10/18/2016 - 11:32
Leiden at night, Dutch Untour

No one does cozy quite like the Dutch do. One of my favorite trips to Holland was in winter, when I marvelled at the intrepid locals out biking through slush and snow. There was nothing as cozy as a brown cafe, walls bathed in candlelight. Here are 5 reasons you should consider a winter trip to Holland:

Two-time Untourists, James and Alice Wootton have been generous enough to share their photos and stories from their recent Untour in the Netherlands. While Italy, Greece and France have reputations for some of the best food in Europe, often times the Netherlands is overlooked. Well look no further to see proof that there is good eating here!

Amsterdam or Bust: Shake the chill with the Winter Light Festival!

on Thu, 06/04/2015 - 18:23
Amsterdam, Holland on the Dutch Untour

Holland is magical year round, but it may well be at its best in the short, chilly days of winter. No culture on earth does cozy quite like the Dutch, from the inviting interiors you'll glimpse through open curtains to the warmth of candle-lit brown cafes. The Dutch bundle up and bike in the snow. The canals glow in the moonlight. And Christmas markets light up the evenings in December.

Best of all, Amsterdam is a paradise in the off season. Just a 30-minute train ride from the Dutch Untour homebase of Leiden, you'll find Amsterdam even more enticing in the off season. This year the Amsterdam Light Festival will light up Amsterdam's town squares and canals with art installations that glow. It's the perfect merging of Dutch art, design and innovation! What a spectacle. Check out this video for more!

Our Favorite Places

Sonia on the Barcelona Untour

I feel lucky to work with a small but dedicated crew of globalists. Our staff is worldly, broad minded, and very well traveled. They've elevated my thinking, stoked my curiosity about new parts of the globe, and helped me grow into a citizen of the world. I recently asked them a simple question: What's your favorite Untour? Some of their answers surprised me. Below, read their responses, and my own two-part answer to what I actually found to be a very tough question.

Sonia (Specialist, France, Spain, the Americas): Since I haven't actually "done" any of our French Untours (I was there in

Windmills, Wooden Shoes and Tulips: Finding the Real Holland

on Wed, 03/11/2015 - 08:51
Leiden, Holland on the Dutch Untour
For many, Holland calls a distinct picture to the mind’s eye of a legendary little boy with his finger thrust bravely into a hole in the dike, determined to save the sleeping village. Along the edge of the dike there are cheerful tulips, and a windmill turns its sails on the horizon. Look, the boy’s shoes are made of wood!

It’s just a story, and an American story at that, the imaginary creation of an American author who never set foot on Dutch soil. Still, the picture is real.

Untourists of the Week: Nancy and Thomas Witom, in Leiden

on Tue, 06/03/2014 - 10:32
Untourists Nancy and Thomas Witom share their experiences from their Leiden Untour

Being able to choose what you do on any given day, depending on how you feel, what the weather is like, or what neat thing another Untourist recommended. Along with that freedom is the great sense of security of having help or advice close by should you need it. The little Untours guidebooks are marvelous.
