Untourists of the Week: Nancy and Thomas Witom, in Leiden

on Tue, 06/03/2014 - 10:32
Untourists Nancy and Thomas Witom share their experiences from their Leiden Untour

Being able to choose what you do on any given day, depending on how you feel, what the weather is like, or what neat thing another Untourist recommended. Along with that freedom is the great sense of security of having help or advice close by should you need it. The little Untours guidebooks are marvelous.

Quickie Quiz: Which Leiden do you prefer?

These beautiful photos by Untourist Daniel Yett make it difficult to choose between boating or walking the canals of Leiden

This week, we'd like to know how you'd rather experience Leiden: walking along the canals or boating in them?

Eileen & Carl Evers, Untourists of the Week "not-on-our-radar" Holland...unforgettable!"

Untourists Eileen and Carl Evers share the story of their Leiden Untour in Holland

I love the local English speaking guides. They give us tips on what to see, how to get around, cell phones in case we need them and usually accompanied by a great meal! Our accommodations have always been comfortable and near sites we're interested in seeing.

Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour and why you chose that particular destination?

Our last Untour experience took us to Atrani on the Amalfi Coast for two weeks and then for another two weeks to Locarno, Switzerland to enjoy the beautiful Ticino Region. Both areas suited our needs to for a combination of wonderful scenic views and historic venues.

Why did you choose to go there?

We love Italy and a previous excursion to Cinque Terre while staying in the Tuscany town of Calci through Untours, made us want to experience the Amalfi Coast.

Untourist of the Week: Helen Dorangrichia, Grandmother Extraordinaire

Rhine Untours, Untourist of the Week

A note from Helen: The family pix do not include me since I was the photographer. I am looking forward to a Swiss Untour with a friend in August of 2013 and another visit to Kandersteg with grandsons in 2014. Untours does it right!!!

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

I am on a mission to take all eight of my grandchildren to Europe to help them see the great world outside of their own hometown. Last summer it was Maya's turn. She is 12. Joining us for two weeks in St. Goar on the Rhine were her mother, Marie, my daughter, Terri and her 16 year old daughter Andreanna. We had a great time hopping on the train or the boat to travel up and down the river seeing the sights, visiting castles, shopping, hiking, etc. We all enjoyed being greeted as friends in the wine shop on the lower level of our building and at our favorite restaurant and bakery.

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

It was a dream vacation: 8 days on the Variety Voyager, the sleek 73-passenger yacht that put us ashore at the fabled ports of Capri, Lipari, Malta, plus 4 ports in Sicily. Then, a train ride to the sparkling Cinque Terre for 4 nights and a heavenly 2 weeks in the fabulous Bonalumi apartment in Locarno, with a breathtaking view of Lake Maggiore.

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?

"It is traveling without traveling--you have a home for a week or two. Time to get to know the locals at the little store, smile at the waitress in the local eating place, and try out a few words with the landlord’s family. And when you don’t feel like seeing the next site’s sights, you can take a day off, stay at home, read a book, or really get to know your local area by walking right out your door."

Untourists of the Week: Pat and Jack Cruser

Untourists, Untours,

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?

"Practically speaking, taking an Untour means no group travel warnings like “Have your bags in the hall by 0530,” “Breakfast is served from 0630 to 0815,” “Be on the bus by 0745,” and it means no searching for an apartment on line, no harried transport from the airport or train station, and no nervousness from being in a foreign country with or without the language. And it means knowing that should the need arise, the local Untours representative is at hand for any emergency: health problems, accident, locked doors, or stolen passport—only one of which afflicted us, but which we saw involve other Untourists.

An Untour means being free to have late coffee, to stay in comfortable surroundings if the weather is nasty, to shop in markets as the locals do for food without bar codes and, more importantly, to immerse oneself in the local culture as much as any foreigner can. Untourists’ local encounters are not limited to tour guides or tourist hustlers, but provide the chance to meet local residents in their everyday surroundings--in their bistros, museums, galleries, or concerts."

Putting together the puzzle that is the Dutch character

on Thu, 11/01/2012 - 13:00
HOlland, Culture, Untours

One of my favorite definitions of culture is "Groups of people solving problems over time.".

It's an interesting puzzle to take a glance at Dutch 'problems' throughout their history, and deduce from the solutions they found, what sort of culture is the result.

Wikipedia, described the Dutch, in its first paragraph as 'a seafaring people living in a watery lowland.'  Therein lies a key to core of the Dutch character.

Because they were seafaring, they traveled.  Because they traveled, they learned.  Because they traveled, they traded.

This Monday, the Untour bloggers (here in our suburban Philadelphia offices)   have a certain lady in mind.....Sandy.  As in Hurricane Sandy.  We hope everyone is battened down properly, if you are in the large lady's path.  If by some chance, you find our Untours Blog has fewer posts, you'll pardon us.  We're likely indisposed, or out of power, thanks to Sandy.

To distract you from either the storm, or, if you are not in her path, all the weather hype you'll be bombarded with about Sandy, we've put together some of
