The DeWoody Family, Untourists of the Week

on Tue, 10/29/2013 - 10:50

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of travelling?

We enjoy the freedom of traveling as a family (without a specified agenda, tour bus, etc) but we enjoy the comfort of knowing that there is someone at our destination that we can go to in case we have questions or encounter problems. The Untours staff does a wonderful job of giving you the information you need to take advantage of all of the opportunities each country offers its visitors while giving you the freedom to explore on your own terms.

Untourist of the Week: Susan Shanley

on Tue, 10/22/2013 - 10:17
We find it particularly delightful that Susan started travelling on Untours in the 80's with her parents, and has continued on her own. Tomorrow, we continue celebrating the Untour habit, as it gets passed down the generations with another slideshow celebrating kids, their parents and their grandparents, on Untours.

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

It was a couple of years ago to the Pisa region of Italy. We stayed at an eco-friendly, totally awesome estate.

Jim & Dawna plan their 25th: Part Two

on Thu, 09/05/2013 - 09:48

We have sent out the first invitations.

The letter ended up with a bit of fine print so that people realized they were on their own for sightseeing and eating. We are just providing the place to stay—in exchange for stories of what they have been doing.

A quick check with Marilee to make sure how many beds are available in each apartment, and we are off to the races.

This Week's Guest Blog: Susan Umberger (in Venice)

on Tue, 08/27/2013 - 10:24

My husband and I arrived at the Marco Polo airport for the first leg of our Venice/Tuscany Sampler. We were a little early, but had an espresso and walked around inside and out while we waited for our transport to Donna Onesta, our apartment for the week. The water taxi was unexpected luxury, that’s the way to arrive in Venice! And our apartment was beautiful and located only steps from the taxi…

Untour Guestblogger of the Week: Susan Umberger on a Venice-Tuscany Untour Sampler

on Tue, 08/20/2013 - 13:30

We made the long drive from Venice to Buonconvento not without a couple of incidents—getting lost in Florence (what a crazy city to drive in!) and the inevitable traffic congestion also around that city. We had instructed our GPS to take us on some back roads, which also took longer than we planned. A stop at a restaurant in Bologna for lunch took a while too, but the food was spectacular! And the drive was lovely, very scenic after we got away from the cities.

An Art Happening in Murlo, Tuscany

on Thu, 07/25/2013 - 10:43
Subject and portrait

Glen McClure, loyal Untourist and brilliant photographer, recently mounted an exhibit of his portraits at the Etruscan Museum in Murlo, Tuscany. "The Italians are beautiful," he says. "So open, engaging and friendly." Untours guests and local residents joined Glen to view the works and celebrate the exhibit at its opening.

Amy & Laurie Calhoun, the Sisterhood of Traveling Untourists - Our Untourists the Week

on Tue, 04/16/2013 - 10:10
Untours, Untourists
Amy & Laurie are sisters who travel together a lot. The photo is of Amy and the words are Laurie's.

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

Our most recent trip was to Provence, though we've been there twice and cannot wait to return for a third time! This is one of the wonderful aspects of Untours: instead of going to ten cities in five days, you learn to slow down and focus deeply. Much like the slow food movement, Untours encourages slow travel, and it is a valuable concept to adopt.

Raymond Heald, Untours

1. Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

It was a dream vacation: 8 days on the Variety Voyager, the sleek 73-passenger yacht that put us ashore at the fabled ports of Capri, Lipari, Malta, plus 4 ports in Sicily. Then, a train ride to the sparkling Cinque Terre for 4 nights and a heavenly 2 weeks in the fabulous Bonalumi apartment in Locarno, with a breathtaking view of Lake Maggiore.

Book Review: An Untourist Recommends 'An Italian Affair'

on Wed, 03/06/2013 - 09:51

The Book:  The Italian Affair by Laura Frazer

What our recommending Untourist, Whitmel Swain,  says about it:

Tell us in a sentence or two what it is about?:

When the author's husband leaves her, she goes to Ischia to nurse her wounds & discovers a number o wonderful things including, of course, love

Why did you like it?:

It tells of the human heart and how it can rebound, and for my wife and I, in Italy
In what region or city is this set?: Florence to start then on to the island of Ischia
In what country is this set?: Italy
Can you tell us, briefly, what it captures about the place it
