Vacation Apartment Hack: How to Feel at Home in Someone Else’s

on Tue, 02/23/2016 - 15:49

When opting to vacation in an apartment instead of a hotel there are many advantages. Firstly, it makes it easier to immerse in the culture if you’re not returning to a sea of other tourists every evening to a large, corporate-feeling hotel. Secondly, nothing can replace the warmth and welcoming environment an apartment can have over a single room with cups covered in plastic bags. Thirdly, you’ll probably get more space for your money since you’re renting a home over one room. Renting an apartment through Untours over a hotel is a no-brainer, but how to do make someone else’s home feel like your own? You’ll mix with locals, pick up a little slang and certainly test your mental arithmetic when calculating whether that round of chèvre is a bargain or a rip-off. One could spend days exploring the numerous options, so we’ve compiled a list of our favorites (foodie ones first of course).

Francy at the Untours holiday party

My favorite Untours holiday tradition is a sensory treat that Cathrin has brought to the mix from her native Germany. Gluhwein, or mulled wine, is a staple of German Christmas markets. She makes her own and sets the crockpot going around 10 a.m. on party day. By noon, the entire office smells of it, a warm spiced scent that clings to your clothing and softens your edges. The Gluhwein works its magic even before the first sip. Here's her super easy recipe!

A Recipe from Alsace: Tarte Flambee

on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 09:28

Welcome to February! This month, we feature France and to start, we're celebrating the delicious Tarte Flambée. One legend proposes, early Alsatians created the tarte to test the heat of their wood-fired ovens. At it's proper temperature for baking bread, the oven should be able to bake a tarte flambée so the edges of the tarte's thin crust are nearly burnt...
