Bert and Idabelle Mills, Untourists of the Week: Swiss-o-philes at the core

on Tue, 06/17/2014 - 09:29
Untourists Idabelle and Bert Mills share their memories of their most recent Swiss Untour, in Frutigen

It occurs to me that Idabelle and I would not have one single Untours memory that would be favorite, but our favorite would be a collage of some eight different Swiss Untours.

Lloyd Shaw and Mary Renfro (Untourists of the Week), Swiss Oberland fanatics!

on Tue, 04/08/2014 - 09:31
Untourists Mary Renfro and Lloyd Shaw share a bit about their recent multigenerational Swiss Oberland Untour in Frutigen

Traveling with Untours provides us the opportunity to vacation on our time schedule and do our own thing. We enjoy living among the common people of Switzerland, grocery shopping in their stores, experiencing their culture, and being separated from fellow American tourists.

And the Unny winners are...

Untourist Ron Anderson captures a great vineyard shot from his Tuscany Untour

As you may know, we had the inaugural Unny Awards just recently. These awards are our way of recognizing the regions which have welcomed Untours all these years.

The Unnies are fun and lighthearted and that's how we like things around here.

We like to think of them as the Oscars® for Untours, though I admit we can't top the touching, heartfelt acceptance speech by Lupita Nyong'o last night.

Here come the Unny Awards!

on Sun, 02/23/2014 - 16:03
Untours hosts the first annual Unny Awards, a celebration of the regions it serves

Since I started working here way back in 2011, the Untours regions have been calling on me to give them some attention. Actually, not just attention, but distinction.

Now, I know they are all big enough to speak for themselves. They don't need you to tell them they're great; we all already know that.

What they really need is for you tell them where they excel.

That's why today, a week before the Oscars®, we're introducing the Unny Awards—a way for you to help us celebrate our regions and give them the recognition they truly deserve.

The Rigi Summit

Untours General Manager Brian Taussig-Lux at Mt. Rigi with Untours Switzerland staff
How many members of the Swiss team do you recognize?
Extra credit if you can name the three current staff members not pictured!

The sun and gray clouds were battling it out as I boarded the train to Lucerne from Meiringen on October 20. After winding up the mountain to the Bruenig Pass, my colleague Margrit boarded the train. She is the longest-serving Untours staff person in the world, having joined the company in the mid 1970s.

The train descended from Bruenig to Lungern, a lakeside village that was decked out in its fall finest. Marlies boarded there. Connie joined us in Sarnen.

There are lots of words to describe an Untour. Many have been used in other blog postings. They are all perfect descriptors. I would like to pull them all together by saying an Untour is:

Untourists of the Week: Cherie & David Fleenor

on Tue, 08/06/2013 - 14:40
Untourists Cherie and David Fleenor in Switzerland on a Swiss Heartland Untour to celebrate their delayed honeymoon

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?

The anxiety of how to live and get around in a foreign country is all resolved for you at the orientation session. There is always someone to phone who knows the area and who speaks English if you have any problems. In 8 Untours, I never had a problem as the Dream Book and other literature given you by Untours is full of good information. Untours will have you experience the area but not get in the crowds nearby.
