Construction of the world's longest train tunnel in Switzerland took 17 years. Traveling through it takes 17 minutes. The new Gotthard Base Tunnel is a project of pioneering proportions – a once-in-a-century structure extending for 57 kilometers (over 35 miles) through the Alps.

In December 2016 the two-way tunnel opened for

Swiss Rail Update: The Gotthard Panorama Express

on Thu, 06/08/2017 - 16:41
Swiss rail travel, Swiss Untour

Here is a notice for all of our Swiss Untour guests. As our Swiss Untour includes a Swiss Travel Pass that covers rail travel, guests spend much time exploring the best scenery by rail.

From 2017, the Wilhelm Tell Express will be replaced by the Gotthard Panorama Express (GoPEx). But as before, travelers will still be able to enjoy a journey of captivating contrasts – from Lucerne (by ship) over Lake Lucerne and by train along the spectacular Gotthard panorama route to Ticino.

Passengers will still be accompanied in the panorama railcar by a travel guide.

Family Fun in the Swiss Oberland

on Tue, 12/23/2014 - 15:40
Thun, on the Swiss Oberland Untour

What could be a better place for family travel than Switzerland? And our Swiss Oberland Untour, tucked into the most beautiful stretch of the Berner Oberland, offers something to delight everyone in your party, the young and the young at heart.

Alpine peaks: All of these are special in their own way, but some have made an effort to be welcoming to children with super playgrounds. Two of the best are at the Stockhorn, the Niederhorn and Beatenberg.

Ballenberg Open Air Museum: Ballenberg above Brienz brought the different styles of architecture from all over Switzerland and rebuilt them in a beautiful setting. It also has live demonstrations of traditional crafts and animal husbandry.

Bern: Visit the namesake bears, see the famous clock tower with its animated figures, and hear the Cathedral Tower with its huge bells. Visit the beautiful small zoo called "Dählhölzli" along the river Aare. Take the little funicular up Gurten (tram to Wabern from Berne train station) and enjoy a wonderul view on the city from a large children's play area. This is where the locals take their children on a fine Sunday afternoon...

Untourists of the Week: Jack and Lila Korvink, going 'home' to Holland

on Mon, 10/22/2012 - 11:30
Korvink, Holland, Untours
Jack, Lila and Jack (the grandson!) in where else?  Holland!

If there was only one family that could be the "Untourists of the Week" for Holland, it might just have to be Jack and Lila Korvink.

Jack and Lila come to the Holland Untour by a slightly UN-typical route.  Jack was born in Holland.  As a matter of fact, Jack was born in Rotterdam in 1940.  For those of you who know your World War II history, you'll  quickly recognize that being a baby, in Rotterdam, in 1940 wasn't the luckiest spot to enter the world.  Rotterdam was perhaps the most heavily damaged Dutch city.
