Interested in contemporary sculpture? Tuscany is a surprisingly furtile place for it! See how the shock of the new and surreal commune with the deep natural beauty of the Tuscan landscape. There are some fantastic sculpture gardens to explore near our farm house apartments on the Tuscany Untour. Here are our favorites.

Site Transitoire

Set off the small road between Leonina and Mucigliani (near Asciano), you will find this monumental sculpture by Jean Paul Philippe, a sort of 1990s stonehenge that inter-
acts strikingly with its natural setting.

Meet Hundertwasser's Whimsical Vienna

on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 11:36
There are so many reasons to love the arts and architecture in Vienna! The city has had a reputation for interesting architecture since the completion of the Ring in 1865.

The Hundertwasser House is a great place to start! Innovative Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser has enraged and delighted an equal number of Viennese with the city-subsidized construction of a low-income apartment complex on the corner of Löwengasse and Kegelgasse.

His building (photographed above) was completed in 1985. It was designed to bring city dwellers closer to nature.

The Paradox of Glasgow: Sacred & Contemporary

on Mon, 09/25/2017 - 12:49
Glasgow on the Scotland Untour
There is so much to see and do in Scotland, we need two Untours to contain and cover it all!

For a healthy jolt of urban life, shake off the castle cobwebs and head to Glasgow in Central Scotland. With its busy modern center, office buildings and traffic, it is a perfect foil to lovely, archaic Edinburgh.

Glasgow is unapologetically contemporary, a city bustling with commerce and art and student life. Accept this, and you will warm to Glasgow quickly and let it round out your experience of Scotland.

Of course you can choose your path when you arrive at the rail station.

Kunstmuseum: Modern Art Fix in Basel

on Mon, 04/03/2017 - 11:15
Basel art museum

On a recent visit to the Kunstmuseum in Basel, I was overwhelmed by the size and breadth of the museum's modern art collection.

A friendly guard explained it quite succinctly. "Yes, Switzerland and America have the largest collections of Modern Art because they could quietly collect and protect 'degenrate art' while Hitler was marching through Europe." I'd never thought of it before, but it made sense. These sorts of interactions and epiphanies are why we travel, and part of the magic that brings museums alive and fills their contents with meaning!

So let me introduce you to one of my new favorite art museums in Europe.

To Basel and Beyond: Contemporary Art and Design in Switzerland

Art on a Swiss Untour, Basel

We love to talk (and write) about the sylvan beauty of small Swiss mountainside villages, pristine lakes and hiking trails, and the old traditions of the Alps. Don’t ever doubt our love of cows and their pastures. But remember the Swiss are at the forefront of modern and contemporary art and design, as creators and collectors. Art Basel draws a high profile international art crowd in its annual multinational exhibits of modern and contemporary art and design. While that may not be your scene, here are some good suggestions for the art and design geeks in your travel party.

This seaside city, known for its quirky architecture, outstanding seafood, and rich art history, is a must-see for anyone traveling to Spain. Architecture really is the center of attention, with great works from Antoni Gaudí, the famously-unfinished church of La Sagrada Familia, and many other cathedrals, buildings and museums.
