Monday Memories: Travels with Grandma (Disney World to Cocktails)

Vacation with Grandma, Monday Memories

Unfussy, patient, and easily wowed, my grandma was a perfect travel companion, even into her 90s. Our trip to Disney World in the 80s was one of countless family vacations that wouldn't have been the same without her.

Monday Memories: Beach belly

on Mon, 11/18/2013 - 10:11
No more belly!

At the town dock, I took note of a woman in a two-piece bathing suit, who had an hour glass figure. In that moment, I learned I had a belly. So, I sucked it in for much of that day and many days thereafter. My father captured me in this photo trying to figure out just how to hold the belly in while simultaneously breathing. Life is complicated!

Monday Memories: Erika

Untourists Margaret and Pete Haggart stop by Vienna's famous Erika movie theater

I taught film history for many decades at the University of Idaho and Vienna provided an opportunity to get my picture taken in front of the movie theater “Erika,” which is the longest running movie theater in the world—showing films since 1900!

Monday Memories: Etoile Park

on Mon, 10/28/2013 - 16:45
Some things never change!

The first time we saw Paris was in 1973. Eleanor was 29 and I was 28. Our hotel, Etoile Park, was on 10 Avenue MacMahon, just down the street from the Arc de Triomphe.

After 35 years we were finally able to travel back in time and walk in the footsteps of our youth.

Monday Memories: Lost and Found in Andalusia

Rose-Marie and Beatriz, our English-speaking savior

On our first unescorted trip to Priego de Cordoba, we made a turn in the wrong direction on our return from the grocery store and quickly found ourselves on a very narrow twisting street where it was impossible to back up and we were afraid to go any further. As we sat in the car pondering how to extricate ourselves, Rose-Marie spotted a woman walking toward us that had helped her weigh our vegetables in the grocery and knew she spoke English.

Monday Memories: On Wings of Gold

on Mon, 10/14/2013 - 09:33
Those were the days.

This week's Monday Memory is from Untours staffer and mezzo-soprano extraordinaire Ellen Peters.

In 1984, I was a 14 year old brat who insisted on hating opera. My dad enjoyed it and therefore it was just not cool. That year I was accepted into All-State Chorus in NJ. The grand finale of the concert was the chorus "Va, pensiero" from the opera Nabucco. I learned it, memorized it and fell deeply in love with it. That was my gateway into a lifelong love of opera.

Four years later, in 1988, as a traveling college student, I found myself alone in Verona.

Untourists Vickie and George share their story of their first Untour apartment

This week's Monday Memory is from Untourists Vickie Kelber and George Wilhelm.

I have no idea who these two people are! Seriously, this is us in front of our first Untours apartment in Kaiserstuhl, Switzerland in 1991. We felt so fortunate to have found this apartment and Untours.

Untourists Eleanor and Bill Kover share their story of their first European trip

This week's installment is our first from Untourists! Get a glimpse of this memory from Eleanor and Bill Kover.

Vienna, Austria. July 24, 1973.

It was our first trip to Europe, part of a two week "Freelance" tour that included London, Vienna, Rome and Paris. You had the choice of taking a bus tour of each city or going it on your own. It just took one bus ride to convince us that we are Untours people at heart.

Monday Memories: Checkpoint Sue

on Mon, 09/23/2013 - 10:30
Untours staffer Sue Baker recounts her stop at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin in the spring of 1970

It was the spring of 1970. My husband Dave and I took an overnight military personnel train from Frankfurt to Berlin and were stopped at the border in the middle of the night to have dogs check under the train.
