Idyll Untour Eurozine header

Greetings Fellow Travelers,

What are the benefits to staying in an Untours apartment as opposed to a hotel? The answer is...MANY! Here are just a few:
* Enjoy ample living space as opposed to a tiny cramped hotel room (and in Europe, hotel rooms are tiny!).
* Prepare your own meals instead of eating every meal in a restaurant and save huge amounts of money.
* Step into another culture knowing that help is never far away, either from your landlord or nearby Untours staff.
* Feel confident staying in an Untours apartment, knowing our stateside staff regularly travels to our programs to visit our accommodations and has been doing so for the 31 years Idyll has been in business.

In this issue of the Eurozine, check out the favorite accommodations of our very own Idyll staff. We all have special places close to our hearts and below are some of them. We will also give you an update on The RIGHT Vacation Rental as well as a sneak preview of some of the properties that will be available for booking in just a few weeks!

The spacious living/dining room of the Gasser Müggler offers great views
as well as welcome comfort at the end of a long day.
Untours Staff favorite accommodations

Swiss Heartland

The Gasser-Müggler in Lungern is spacious, homey, has a wonderfully appointed modern kitchen with a cozy corner bench, which looks out on an adorable little chapel, and the most comfortable beds. The best, however, is its location on the shore of Lake Lungern. I don't mind the uphill walk to the train station a bit; in my eyes it's free exercise that gets your system going in the morning, and you get to greet many a friendly villager on your way. Cathrin Baumbach, Swiss and Dutch Team

Tuscany South
One of my favorite apartments is the Poggio alle Rose 1.  It is the epitome of what I imagine a Tuscan farmhouse apartment to look like.  Its terracotta floors, warm hues, comfy furniture and fireplace make the apartment is so welcoming and homey.  And the wonderful views from the patio and the faint sound of sheep bells in the distance make this a spot so serene that it's difficult to go home. Andi Cancelliere, Italian Team

Paris
My favorite apartment would have to be Martyrs in Paris.   Perfectly situated just outside Montmartre, one of the most interesting and historically relevant quarters in the city, the apartment is both spacious and modern.  An excellent interior design only adds to the charm and contributes to the feeling of living in Paris during its cultural heyday. Pete Novick, French & Spanish Team
The kitchen of the Poppy apartment in Greece has everything you'll need
to whip up tasty meals from your forays at the local market.
Vienna
My favorite apartment is the Amalia A apartment.  It is a spacious, two level apartment with a terrace and was beautifully renovated by a young architect who lives in the building and also owns it.  It is in a great neighborhood with markets and local restaurants and only a 6-minute subway ride to the Opera House.
Marianne Gunther, Germany, Greece, & Central European Team

Umbria

I like the Il Tigli apartment in Umbria because I like opening the kitchen shutters in the morning and looking out at the hillside village of Trevi. It is on flat farmland and with bicycles, it's easy to take a quick tour of the neighborhood. The property is very well kept and has nice outdoor sitting areas. Sue Baker, Italian Team

Greece
Nothing could be more romantic than staying in the Poppy apartment, a spacious newly renovated apartment with old world charm that is located in the lovely and exotic old-town of Nafplio, Greece. Sit on the balcony in the evening with a glass of wine and the most magnificent view of the lit up Palamidi fortress. It can't get much better than that. Mia Lehmann,
Germany, Greece, & Central European Team
Enjoy a simple yet delicious meal on your terrace at Le Chiuse 4
and marvel at the surrounding countryside between bites.
Holland
I love the Rembrandt apartment in the winter - the warm and cozy rooms are wonderful to come home to after riding around Leiden on rented bikes in our hats and mittens, picking up wine, aged gouda and fresh bread from the market.  It's also great with the new internet access - we brought our laptop and could look up restaurants, train schedules, the tourist office addresses for every Dutch town, etc., so we were really able to settle in. The Rembrandt is my dream home!  Kate Duncan, Swiss and Dutch Team

Swiss Heartland
To me it's not the apartment but the town!  If I had to pick, it would be any of the Greutert places in Sachseln. They are great English speaking hosts and will add so much to your overall experience. You will feel you truly met new friends by the end of your stay. Plus, in Sachseln, you'll have everything you'll need, great discount grocery store, butcher, baker, bank with free internet, and a choice of several great restaurants.  Francy Douglas-Breon, Swiss & Dutch Team

Provence
I love the Gamet 2 because although you're only 2 miles from town, you feel as if you're deep in the countryside.  Being perched up on a hill gives you a fabulous view of the mountains in the region and the valley below, a view that goes very well with dining al fresco on the patio.

Tuscany South
I love the Le Chiuse 4 apartment. Though it is a tiny place, it is cozy. The window from the bedroom overlooks the vineyards. I love the ritual of opening the shutters every morning, leaning out into the sun and surveying the grapes! Andrea Szyper, Italian Team

An Update on The RIGHT Vacation Rental
We can see daylight!  Our website programmers are racing to finish finding all the glitches.  Our property hosts are doing last minute checks to make sure all the information about each property is correct.  We expect these wonderful properties below (and more than a hundred others) to be available for booking in the next several weeks! We think our choice of properties -- a wide range, from cozy and simple to fabulous, super-splurges -- are ideally suited for the independent traveler who wants to go exploring, but who wants Idyll's advice on where the best spots really are. Check out our accommodations in:

  • Dubrovnik, the coastal showstopper -- described by the New York Times as "arguably Europe's most beautiful city"
  • Dordogne, the sunny, golden-stone region of Southwest France
  • Corfu, an island where you can rent the old Cadbury (of chocolate fame) mansion overlooking the Adriatic Sea
Thanks for your patience with this long-awaited project and our apologies for the delays. If you haven't done so already, be sure to go to www.therightvacationrental.com and send us your email.  That way, you will receive notification the minute our wonderful site goes public!

House on the Hill, in Dubrovnik, Croatia is freshly renovated, but still retains a lovely Dalmation charm.   This apartment, hovering above the peace and quiet of the beautiful park Gradac, is an ideally situated one-bedroom vacation rental in a family estate just outside of the Pile gates of the old city. The apartment boasts lots of garden and terrace space and the gates leading to the Old Town are just a few minutes' walk away.
The Cottage above the Vineyard in Dordogne, France lies in a valley that is home to five exquisite Dordogne châteaux.  This lovely little spot, nestled on a steep hillside is the renovation of a golden stone barn into a comfortable and pretty apartment.  Your own private garden with spectacular views and a kind, hospitable British hostess living next door are two of the reasons you will be utterly charmed by this apartment.
Thalassa House, on Corfu, Greece is a stone villa, its front entrance opening into a sumptuous living area and inviting stone fireplace. French windows lead onto a covered terrace for outdoor dining and superb views across the bay. Built in the 1960s for the Cadbury family, this secluded three-bedroom villa overlooks the sea and white cliffs of Corfu. A pool and landscaped garden make it a true home for the holidays.
