Grüezi Fellow Travelers,

Over 30 years ago, former history professor and cattle rancher Hal Taussig began sending people to Switzerland, where they would stay in apartments instead of hotels and live like locals instead of tourists. His company, Untours, which he started at his kitchen table, has blossomed into a successful company that today sends thousands of people a year to over 20 destinations throughout Europe. The pristine beauty of the Swiss Heartland coupled with the Untour concept of independent, support-based travel was a winning combination back then and remains so today. Just what is it about this small, landlocked country with three official languages that makes it such a special destination? This issue of Untours Eurozine seeks to answer this very question. Read about why Untourists love Switzerland, find answers to commonly asked questions about the country and discover little known facts about it. Plus, check out sample apartments in all three Untours locations in Switzerland: Heartland, Oberland, and Ticino.

Quintessential Switzerland
We all know about the Swiss Alps and cheese fondue, but there must be more to Switzerland than this! Especially since people go back year after year. We asked people why they love Switzerland and here is just a sampling of their responses. Thanks to everyone who wrote in!

Peter Haggart, who has taken 5 Untours to Switzerland, writes why the country is special to him:
  • Emerald green lakes and snow capped mountain peaks - and you can hike or ride to any of them!
  • A transportation system that is the best in the world. When they say the train leaves at 15:03 - then it leaves at 15:03! Or perhaps the train is a bit late and you think you are going to miss your bus connection home - don't worry - tell the conductor and the bus will be waiting for you!
  • Wonderful mountain buses with their lovely three or four note horn that warns autos on the winding mountain road that WE have the right of way.
  • A picnic lunch by a mountain lake surrounded by wild flowers, white clouds, and the distant ringing of cowbells.
  • Mountain villages with no cars.
We have been to Switzerland five times and you would think that we would run out of things to do and places to see. You are wrong! We have not even begun to explore all the possibilities! Each visit is a new experience based on the lessons learned from the past about transportation, weather, etc.

Phil and Jane King, who have gone on 3 Untours to Switzerland, describe their favorite things about going there:
  • A country and apartments that are spotlessly clean.
  • Scenery with picture postcard views at every turn in the road.
  • Friendly hosts. Friendly people.
  • Outstanding hiking and photo opportunities.
We are going to Meiringen for our fourth Swiss Untour next August (our 12th Untour). If there is anything we don't like about Switzerland, we haven't found it yet ... and probably never will. It is truly a dream destination. What's not to like about Switzerland? It is great!

A gorgeous view of one of many of Ticino's lakes

Vance Roy, a former Untourist and now full-time resident of Sachseln, located in the Swiss Heartland, has this to say about why he is so drawn to his adopted country:

In two words: "Personal Responsibility". I noticed this in 1977, and it kept me interested until 1994 when I moved here for good.
To amplify:
  • Responsibility for one's actions remains a mainstay of the Swiss culture. Honesty, order, correctness (not just political), and consideration are all factored into this concept. Things are done as if the person doing them had to sign his work for all to see. Stores leave goods out front at noon (and sometimes all weekend) because they do not expect theft.
  • There is a gentleness toward others here. I would never think of seeing a male friend and not shaking his hand, or in the case of a woman, giving her a kiss on her cheek three times (left, right, left, don't ask me why).
  • There is a great sense of personal privacy. You do not invade one's space unless invited, and then with some degree of hesitancy. I have to make my friend open my mail when I am away. He is blown away that I would leave my back up hard drive with him on those occasions.

After 7 Untours to Switzerland, Elliott and Susan Vorce explain why they keep going back:

  • Switzerland is like going home. There is nowhere else we have experienced, from Lebanon to England to Greece to Morocco, which imparts the ambiance of a friendly home-like atmospheric welcome quite like Switzerland. Their particular brand of hospitality is not to be found in any other experience we have had…the Swiss landlords/landladies/Untour staff are at once caring, concerned, warm, friendly, instructive, and interested in all we do. Reason number one for us is, in a word, "people!"
  • The spectacular beauty of the scenery, the cleanliness of the cityscapes, the freshness of the bracing mountain air, the purity of the mountain streams and rivers, and, of course, the majesty and spectacular panorama of the mountains and their ever-changing vistas. It’s difficult not to sound verbose or trite when describing Swiss scenery, but it is simply incredibly beautiful, no matter where one looks next.
  • The Swiss lakes are also high on our list of attractions. When one considers Switzerland, of course one considers mountains. Yet, one of the most alluring facets of Swiss life, for us, is the lake attractions from the way the Swiss have transformed them into gorgeous tourist attractions (and not something just to be "gotten around") to the charming villages and attractions everywhere…on every lake.
  • The intangibles best described in phrases, not sentences…so bear with us! The baleful look of the magnificent Brown Swiss cows when you meet them on the trail…the pungent wonderful odor and taste of mountain cheese…the satisfaction in "picking up" a little German (even though most Swiss speak better English than some Americans)…never having to drive a car…713 years of democracy!

The entire experience is magic it both pushes and pulls you to return. We will be back; and we will be back again.

Little known facts about CH

On any road in Europe, you are bound to see cars with bumper stickers identifying which country they are from. Usually they are easy to decipher: ‘F’ for France, ‘NL’ for the Netherlands, ‘I’ for Italy. However, many foreigners get stumped with ‘CH’. No country starts with ‘C’ in Europe, right? Actually, that is not entirely true; CH actually stands the Latin phrase Confoederatio Helvetica and Switzerland's official title (in English) happens to be 'Swiss Confederation'. Check out more interesting trivia on Switzerland below. If you know of any interesting tidbits about Switzerland or any other European country, email us!
  • The Swiss company Nestlé, famous for chocolate, began when Henri Nestlé, a pharmacist, developed and marketed milk for feeding babies. Today, the Swiss eat a world record 23 pounds per person per year – roughly one ordinary-sized bar for every single person, every day of the year.
  • Swiss Guards, dressed in uniforms purportedly designed by Michelangelo, still protect the Pope at the Vatican and are the only remaining vestige of a military unit that medieval popes established.
  • Ticino has been controlled by the Swiss since the early 1500s but did not officially join the Swiss Confederation as a new canton until 1803.
  • Switzerland is a politically neutral country, yet it has more soldiers per capita than any other Western democracy.
  • The origins of the Fondue are thought to be from the high valleys that during the long winter months were unreachable. The foods that kept the longest were stale bread, cheese and pickles.
  • The Pre-Alps and Alps cover over 60% of Switzerland.
  • The novelist, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle chose Meiringen’s Reichenbach Falls as the setting for the death of his character Sherlock Holmes. In The Final Problem (1891), Conan Doyle has the detective meet his archenemy Professor Moriarty on a ledge above the falls; the two become locked in an intense struggle before both plunge presumably to their deaths.

Switzerland FAQ

Q: What are the differences between the three Swiss programs?
A: The Swiss Heartland Untour is based in tranquil mountain villages between Lucerne and Interlaken. On this Untour, wildflowers, Swiss cows with their tinkling bells and alpenhorns abound as well as dramatic mountain views and hiking opportunities. You have great access to transportation via the Lucerne-Interlaken train line. The Swiss Oberland Untour is situated in bustling villages around Lake Thun and in towns nestled in the Kander Valley. This Untour provides you with quick access to Interlaken and Bern, just a few minutes' train ride away, as well as gorgeous scenery and great access to the French part of Switzerland. The Swiss Ticino Untour is located in and around Locarno on Lake Maggiore in the Italian part of Switzerland. This Untour offers the unique blend of Italian language and cuisine coupled with Swiss efficiency and breathtaking vistas.

Q: What kind of transportation is included in the Swiss Untours?
A: All Swiss Untourists receive a 2-week, 2nd class train pass (upgrade to 1st class is available at additional cost) which provides unlimited travel on all trains, busses and boats (except the boat to Lake Maggiore). Pass holders are also eligible for discounts on lifts. In addition, all Untour apartments are located just a short distance from a train station.

Q: What else can Switzerland offer besides hiking?
A: The possibilities are endless! Enjoy the magnificent landscape from trains, boats, and lifts. Picnic in a lush alpine meadow. Attend festivals of all kinds such as cheese, yodeling, and folk festivals. Visit medieval towns and explore preserved monuments. Indulge in Swiss chocolate and hearty cuisine. Visit the larger cities including several new museums that have garnered international acclaim (Lucerne: Picasso Museum, Basel: Fondation Beyeler). These are just a sampling of activities available to you on your Untour! Also, remember that hikes range from easy strolls to challenging ascents, so everyone from the inexperienced hiker to the seasoned mountaineer can participate at his or her own level.
