Special Edition:  Amazing Amalfi

This special edition of our Eurozine is in honor of  great new properties on the Amalfi coast of Italy that we have just added to The RIGHT Vacation Rental, Untours' "property only" website.

Amalfi is often described as "the most beautiful coastline in Europe" for its dramatically steep cliffs that rise out of the sea and the exquisite village that are perched along those cliffs. Judy Ebery of Cuisine International says it this way:

Amalfi speaks to my soul. Crystal clear azure water lapping against craggy black rocks, creating translucent foam. Magenta bougainvillea and lush verdant ivy cascading down steep walls, T\terraces of fragrant lemon groves carved into the hillsides. Faded pastel homes clinging to the mountainsides.

It is that very same beauty that raises some pertinent questions:

  • I have heard how steep it is in Amalfi; will it be too much climbing for me?
  • Curvy coastal roads are beautiful, but they can be tricky to drive.   Can I manage it?  Is there a way to see Amalfi without a car?
  • I know Amalfi is the place to be for Europeans in the summer...will it be too touristy?  too expensive?  all booked up?

We think our new properties provide some very intriguing answers to these questions.  So have fun browsing among the newest members of our stellar cast of properties....to see if these gems on the coast of Italy are where you'll call home.

Happy travels,

Marilee Taussig

Can I afford it? On your private balcony at the Sunny Ravello apartment, you can gaze out on amazing Amalfi without busting your budget!  This apartment, like all of the ones featured in this edition, has something amazing about it.  In this case it is the price.  While most vacation apartments fetch between $1200 and $2000 a week along this fabled rocky coast, you (and 1 - 3 traveling companions) can stay here for as low as $862 a week.

Along with your balcony overlooking the sea, there is a terrace with a view of the mountains.  An open plan layout in this apartment house works well for a couple, or family.  A double bed in the bedroom and sleeping for two on the couch are presented in pleasant modern furnishings. The swimming pool offers refreshment at your doorstep.  Good kitchen facilities, plenty of outdoor space and a location 10 - 15 minutes walkfrom the wonderful main square of Ravello makes this place an excellent choice, as well as one of our very best values in the Amalfi region.  No scrimping and plenty of saving!

I know Amalfi always means some steps, but can I find a property with the fewest possible steps?

Interlude by the Sea (pictured above) is a beautiful little house, utterly private and right on the sea, and while it doesn't eliminate steps, it is one of those with only a few...15 steps down from your private parking place you will find a terrace with this unforgettable view.  You could live on this terrace! It is surrounded by flowers and greenery, looks out at the sea, opens onto the kitchen and livingroom, has its own furniture, umbrella and beach chairs and shower (for coming off the beach).   In addition, inside you have a nice combination living  room/diningroom/kitchen area (with sleeping for one on the couch) and a double bedroom (with king-size bed).

If privacy, a minimum of stairs, and this view were not enough, this is also good choice for those who don't want to drive, since the bus stop is just 5 minutes from the house.  The private beach (100 steps down), sun chairs and umbrella along with the terrific terrace make it a place you may never want to leave.  But a location convenient to Amalfi's best day trips  (Amalfi 1.5 km; Atrani 1km; Ravello 3 km; Positano 16 km)  means you won't be able to resist being lured away from this little gem for some wonderful day trips.

I don't really want to take on those curvy roads? Do you have something for someone who doesn't want to drive?

The Old Flour Mill apartment (pictured above) is a perfect choice.  And it too has relatively few steps.  Overlooking the seafront of Minori and situated in a renovated old flour mill, this apartment can be entered directly from the seafront, thanks to a private lane.

From the entrance hall (decorated with works by local artists) you reach the 1st floor, through an elevator. (Total number of steps 30.)  The apartment,  around 750 square feet, is composed of two areas. The day area includes: living room, kitchen (with window and small terrace overlooking the inside part of the town) and half-bath.  Two wide windows overlook the seafront and the beach in this area.  The little terrace is 129 square feet. From the day area, the bedroom area is reached through some steps made in lava stone and decorated by ceramic tiles. This second area is composed of a double bedroom, a twin room and bath with shower. Furniture is new and of good quality. Heating, air conditioning and a double garage are available.  The bus stop is just at the exit of the apartment; restaurants and bars are very close and reachable by a nice walk.  All in all, this is the place for an easy time in Amalfi.

Is it all booked up?  Is it too crowded?  Yes and no is the answer,  if you are talking about one of our favorite properties, Ravello Dream. This is the property about which our representative in Amalfi says, "This is one that people come back to again and again."  Why? The location alone is remarkable.   A terrace with a breathtaking view, a swimming pool, and tennis courts make this accommodation an outdoor paradise.  Its location, 300 yards from the main square of unforgettable Ravello, gives you the option of being right in the midst of it all, or tucked away in your little island of peace.  Alas, because it is so wonderful, July and August of this year is already booked.  Lucky for us that so many people in Europe vacation during those months, but leave those lovely September (and May!) days for Americans...many of whom prefer to travel in quieter and cooler months.

Along with an unforgettable terrace, your apartment includes a kitchen area with stove top, oven and fridge, one bedroom with a queen size bed, and bathroom with shower.  You'll notice that the indoor living area is missing, but as the picture above attests...the outdoor area is where you will want to live...maybe forever!

"If we could see infinity, it would probably look like this," said the painter Corregio when he gazed out over the Bay of Salerno for the first time.

We can't decide which of these properties offer the most exquisite views....maybe you can decide which view of "infinity" suits you best...
