The San Marco district of Venice is busy, full of sights, churches and high-end shops and boutiques. The Piazza San Marco draws big crowds to the Basilica, Palazzo Ducale and its other museums and grand cafés. The newly reopened La Fenice opera house is in this neighborhood, along with smaller churches and countless restaurants and coffee bars. The maze of streets beyond the square, running closer to the canal, is residential and much quieter, with more of a neighborhood feel.

Venice is best known for Piazza San Marco, ringed with spectacular museums and St. Mark’s Basilica. But there’s much to see beyond the lure of San Marco, such as the art treasures of the Accademia Museum and the grandeur of the Grand Canal. The city offers endless museums and historic churches to explore, lovely architecture, artistic masterpieces and hidden beauty around every corner. There’s fascinating people-watching and lively neighborhood life that a 2-week stay will allow you to enjoy. The nearby Lido offers grand beaches, and the lagoon islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello offer fascinating diversions.

Outside Venice, easy day trips by rail include Padua, Vicenza, Treviso, Verona and Bologna.
