FAVORITEN, AUSTRIA - VIENNA, Home of AMALIA C

Village Photo
Favoriten is also known as "the tenth district" of Vienna. It was once a separate town and wasn't annexed into Vienna until the nineteenth century. It is now an increasingly fashionable neighborhood because of its proximity to the center and its convenient selection of shops and restaurants. The Favoritenstrasse pedestrian zone is one of Vienna's most popular shopping streets. Even though the neighborhood is only 7 minutes by subway from Vienna's State Opera House, prices in shops and restaurants in Favoriten are much lower than in the center. The open-air Viktor-Adler market is a wonderful place to buy fresh produce from local farmers.

The Amalienbad is arguably Favoriten's most important landmark. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful art deco spa and swimming pool in the world. Its closest competition is the Gellert Hotel in Budapest. It was originally built as a bath house for the neighborhood's residents who did not have bath facilities in their apartments. It is now used mainly as a swimming pool and physical therapy clinic. Even if you are not a swimmer, you should take a peek at the beautiful pool. If you are a swimmer, the pool is open to the public and entry prices are quite reasonable.
