Day trips and Sightseeing: There are so many magnificent things to see in Venice: In Cannaregio, the north side of Venice: Madonna dei Miracoli and Madonna dell’Orto (Renaissance painter Tintoretto’s church). In the districts of San Polo and Santa Croce: the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, the Rialto Bridge and market. In the Dorsoduro, the East Bank of the Grand Canal: the Accademia and Guggenheim museums and Ca’ Ressonico (a canal-side palace with all the aristocratic accoutrements). In San Marco: the Piazza San Marco and its Basilica, the Palazzo Ducale and Couture Alley. In the Castello district: the Arsenale, the historic shipbuilding center of the city. On the lagoon islands: Murano, world-famous for its glass; car-free Burano for colorfully painted houses and exquisite lace; Torcello for sylvan quiet and the renowned Grand Canal. Farther away by rail are Padova, Vicenza, Treviso and Verona.

Off-the-beaten-track treasures that can’t be beat: “Enjoying a cappuccino, a warm almond brioche and early morning shopping at the bustling fish and vegetable markets. Or an exquisite evening of music by Vivaldi, surrounded on all sides by enormous paintings by Tintoretto. Visit the remote island of Torcello and its eleventh-century cathedral with a marvelous mosaic of the Last Judgment and a view from the bell-tower to die for. Afterward, enjoy a seafood lunch with spaghetti con vongole amid a festive Sunday crowd on the sunny garden patio of the Trono d’Attila trattoria. The thousand-year-old shipyard of the Arsenale, mentioned in Dante’s Inferno is still there, and the “secret itinerary” at the Doge’s Palace with its reminiscences of the Council of Ten and Casanova is another sight not to be missed.
