The action began, the crowd stirred and yelled, and foot soldiers on the sidelines watched anxiously as the competition began.

Since it was not a large area, the spectators were close to the action and knights on horses had to pull up quickly after they made their runs.

Hoofs thundered as the expert horsemen showed their skills in various exercises. For comedy relief our "drinking knight" would occasionally fall off his horse and then stagger around the arena, lecturing the crowd on the benefits of serious beer-drinking.

(Incidentally, he was an expert horseman. He had to be in order to carry out his hijinks.)

The cold steel of flashing swords delineated between good and evil in fierce battles that raged around the arena (in between contests).

We get a final salute from a hero knight, and a snarling war cry from a villain and the crowd empties out of the arena area to explore more of the castle and the Castle Market.

We did a final walkabout through the castle ruins and faire. It had been a "fun" day and we enjoyed everything we had experienced, and the really nice people we met.
