It was after four o'clock and the sky had clouded over, but it was still pleasantly warm. We decided to walk back to the village and as we descended the cobblestone street we had delightful views of the Rhine below us.

St. Goar Before going further I'd like to bring you up to speed on St. Goar's location in relation to the rest of Europe and Germany. We began in Berlin, then took the ICE high speed train to Hannover and south to Frankfurt. We took a regional train from Frankfurt to Mainz, then changed to a local train to get to St. Goar in the Middle Rhine area.

This map shows the Middle Rhine area. We were based in St. Goar and visited by boat and/or train the cities marked with the green circle.
COLOGNE

We had done considerable walking and climbing steps the first week of our trip in Berlin. Now it was time for a relaxing Sunday routine. We learned that the nearby village of Oberwesel had an organ concert every Sunday morning at 11:30. The village was only six minutes away by train and we arrived early enough to do a short walkabout before the concert. As you can see, the main street was not a beehive of activity. Most folks were either in church or relaxing at home; all the shops were closed.

It was a warm, sunny day-ideal for window shopping and admiring the ancient architecture in this well kept little village. A unique carved wine cask decorated the sidewalk in front of a wine shoppe. In some areas parts of the town's medieval walls still remained, integrated into local buildings. One fortress tower (right) was renovated and converted into an "apartment" tower for residential use.
