Murano, Italy - Venice, Home of Valentina 4

The island of Murano is renowned for its long tradition of glass-making, which remains the principal industry of the region to this day. Located about three miles north of Venice, and reached by a quick ferry ride, Murano is the second largest island in the Venetian Lagoon and is an excellent home base from which to explore Venice and the surrounding region. Ferry-loads of visitors come to explore Murano’s Museo del Vetro, which tells the story of glass through the centuries, and to shop for locally crafted souvenirs.Operating glass factories offer visitors the unique experience of watching contemporary artisans demonstrate the centuries-old craft of glass-making. Other attractions include the Basilica of Santa Maria and San Donato, which features a colorful mosaic floor and supposedly houses the bones of a slain dragon.

Murano has its own shop-lined Grand Canal, reminiscent of quieter parts of Venice, with wider walkways and less traffic on the water. Locally caught seafood is a specialty of all the Venetian Islands and you will find plenty of fresh fish and seafood, along with pizza and classic pasta dishes to enjoy in Murano.

From Venice, easy day trips by rail include Padua, Vicenza, Treviso, Verona and Bologna
