KANDERSTEG, SWITZERLAND - OBERLAND

Kandersteg Untourists reach their village by a railway that features a spectacular climb through the Kander Valley to this surprisingly large plateau at almost 4,000 feet. The train ride to Kandersteg from Thun is fascinating, passing through 2 tunnels between Frutigen and Kandersteg where the train reverses directions completely to gain altitude by spiraling inside the mountain.

Kandersteg is a village of about 1,000 people with no fewer than 30 restaurants!

Lying at the foot of the rugged escarpments that frame the snow-capped peaks of the Blumlisalp to the east and dip into a green Alpine basin, Kandersteg is best known for its location at the north end of the Lotschberg tunnel. Thanks to the tunnel, residents and visitors alike have access to the valley of Lotschental, which has kept its unique Alpine traditions, perhaps more than any other region in Switzerland. Kandersteg offers 3 lifts to surrounding peaks in the summer, banks, ATMs and a supermarket.

Kandersteg is also the center for a new kind of hang gliding called paragliding, which is really more parachuting than hang gliding, safer than either and easily learned. Although Kandersteg is a paradise for hikers, it can be enjoyed by non-hikers as well.
