LUNGERN, SWITZERLAND - HEARTLAND

Lungern is a serene pastoral village nestled on the shore of turquoise Lake Lungern at the foothill of Hasliberg mountain. It consists of a lower part, which is home to most of the restaurants, 2 medium-sized grocery stores and bank/ATM, and an upper part with the train station and well-known Bahnhöfli Restaurant. Lungern’s landmark is its impressive 100-year-old Gothic stone church that was modeled after that of Lourdes and whose predecessor had fallen victim to floods. The equally impressive cemetery below the church features fine examples of carved wooden crosses. Two small white chapels in the village’s lower part share the bell-tolling regularity of the larger parish church, mixing church bells with cowbells to make up the symphony of Lake Lungern. One of the chapels, Burglen chapel, is a favorite wedding chapel for Swiss couples.

Lungern offers a variety of family activities—from great hiking to lake swimming and minigolf. The cable car from Obsee in the lower part of the village takes you to the alpine heights of Schönbühl, with its spectacular vistas and challenging hikes.

Lungern lies in the very center of Switzerland. Hourly rail service in both directions (1 hour to Luzern and Interlaken) makes it an ideal base for day trips throughout Switzerland.
