Our new Italian Untour Director Amber Martin recently returned from a visit to all six of our Italian UnTours. It was the only one of our Untour areas where she had not spent time before. Here she shares her first impressions of the Amalfi Coast.
The very moment I stepped off the bus in Amalfi, I knew I had instantly fallen in love.
Surrounded by groves of lemon trees perched on the cliff sides, these stunning small seaside towns are adorned in hand painted tiles and beautiful displays of limoncello, set amid the breathtaking natural scenery.
This was my first time ever visiting the Amalfi Coast, and the sun seemed to shine differently on this small slice of paradise.
Every morning I would visit one of the pasticcerie (pastry shops) to enjoy a cornetto con crema, which is similar to a croissant with custard cream inside, as well as order my favorite spremuta d’arancia, a freshly squeezed orange juice.
I spent a good bit of my time on the Amalfi Coast exploring our current apartments in the towns of Amalfi and Atrani, as well as visiting a few up-and-coming accommodations we will soon be offering through UnTours. Above is the view of Amalfi’s main street from the apartment where I stayed.
I loved Amalfi. Above is its Sant’Andrea fountain, overlooking the Duomo. Apostle Saint Andrew’s relics are kept here in the church and are celebrated twice a year during the Festival of Sant’ Andrea.
I was happily surprised how easy it was to move between these two towns, given they are less than a mile apart. Here is a glimpse of Atrani’s beach, empty in the off season, but beautiful all year long.
Let’s not forget to mention one of the best rewards of being right on the coast: the food! One of my favorite dishes I enjoyed in Amalfi was the zuppa di pesce at La Taverna del Duca, a fantastic fish soup served in a massive skillet and filled with every type of seafood you could think of. As someone who thoroughly enjoys seafood, the Amalfi Coast was a treasure trove of visually appealing and truly delicious meals.
One of my most cherished memories from this trip was simply walking down to the piers at night and spending time enjoying the sea breeze and the calming sounds of the coast. It became one of my happy places, a spot I will continue to return to in my dreams!
I can see why the Amalfi Coast Untour is one of our most beloved and popular trips in Italy, and I look forward to talking to Untourists about their plans to travel there. I am also eager for my next trip back to the Amalfi Coast, as I left a small part of my heart along its shoreline.
