Pernes-les-Fontaines, France - Provence, Home of Alcaraz

As its name suggests, Pernes-les-Fontaines is a town of fountains. The 30-odd fountains scattered throughout the town – varying in size, design and condition – were mostly installed in the late eighteenth century and can be seen as part of a trail that encompasses all of the fountains as well as the town’s historic legacy.

In addition to the fountains, you can walk into the old town center through the fifteenth-century fortified gateway. Trace the remains of the city ramparts. Climb up to the top of the thirteenth-century Ferrande Tower to see frescoes from the period. Drop into the dungeon of the ruins of the ancient Chateau of the Counts of Toulouse. Take refuge under the eighteenth-century covered market, or just take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful town houses, dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Almost every turn through the old town of Pernes-les-Fontaines provides a glimpse of its historic wealth.

A sizeable town with more than 10,000 residents, Pernes-les-Fontaines has all the amenities – banks, bakeries, butcher, supermarkets and other shops – as well as its own outdoor market on Saturdays featuring locally grown produce. There are several well-regarded restaurants in town and the surrounding area..

Located at the northern end of the Vaucluse plateau, Pernes-les-Fontaines offers a wide variety of day-trip possibilities as close as 20 minutes away and as far as 1.5 hours. Here's what our guests have to say

★★★★★

Our host was superb - wonderful food and wine available on our arrival. We had plenty of privacy and lots of opportunities for relaxing outside and in the home. The main part of town was only a short walk away. The meal and venue for our orientation was perfect and we enjoyed chatting with our fellow "UnTourists".

The Alcaraz "apartment" or rather same house was comfortable and spacious for two adults. We throughly enjoyed eating out in the patio as one of us enjoyed the fresh produce at the various markets and likes to cook. Apartment was with easy walking distance of center of town and many restaurants options from pizza to fine dining. It was also within easy drives to many Provence attractions. Would definitely say at apartment again.

Fully equipped, spotlessly clean, delightful yard, walking distance to town, lovely in every way.

★★★★★

A lovely clean, well- maintained house with all the amenities one needs in a vacation rental. The kitchen, although small, had all the necessary cookware and appliances including an American- style coffeemaker, a dishwasher, and a washing machine, all with directions in English. Plenty of hot water for showers. A beautiful private patio and off-street parking. A quiet location, an easy 10-minute walk to the town center with tourist office, supermarket, old town, restaurants and the fabulous Saturday morning market. The owner is very friendly but absolutely respected our privacy. This home would have earned 10 starts had it had window screens.

★★★★★

Ideal. Easy walk to town center. Well stocked kitchen and warm and friendly host.
