Escort and Orientation

Our Swiss staff meets and greets you at the Zürich Airport on arrival day. We’ll answer any questions you may have, help you validate your rail passes and let you know when and where we’ll be leaving for your Swiss hometown. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll have time to freshen up, get Swiss francs from an ATM or bank, enjoy a light meal and stretch your legs.

There are 2 escorted groups to the Heartland. The travel time from Zürich airport to your hometown ranges from 1.75 to 2.5 hours. Your landlords will meet you at your hometown’s train station or bus stop and escort you to your accommodations.

If you’re unable to arrive in time for our group escort, or are coming from other parts of Europe, you may need to reach your Swiss hometown on your own. In this case, we’ll provide you with detailed instructions before you leave home.

On the day after your arrival, we meet all Untourists for an orientation session. Much of it is devoted to teaching the use of the Swiss public transportation system, but you’ll also learn about specific events going on during your stay. It’s a good opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

As a follow-up to the orientation, an escorted Friday trip – to the lovely city of Luzern, for example – helps guests familiarize themselves with the use of the public transportation system.

Later during your stay, Untourists can choose to join an escorted excursion into the Alps to see cheese made at a family-operated farm. Cheese is made in the high Alps only during the warmer months, so a lower altitude activity is scheduled for other times of the year: a visit to a woodcarving studio or a chocolate factory might be planned. In addition, Untours hosts a farewell dinner with all fellow travelers from your area. Local musicians and yodelers provide the entertainment, and some guests get the chance to play the alphorn.
