The Chalet Erika vacation rental is located in a quiet residential neighborhood just a few blocks from Meiringen’s main street. The apartment is very cozy and nicely furnished. Its living room and kitchen are combined in one room, which is complemented by a couch and dining table for two. The apartment might be on the smaller side, but surprises guests with an outstanding array of amenities, including a washer/dryer, a rarity in Switzerland. Located in the back of the building, the apartment has its own separate entrance. Guests also have the use of a small furnished patio (with a laundry drying rack) in the backyard garden, which offers nice views. The friendly landlady lives in the same house.

A flat twelve- to fifteen-minute walk leads to the center of Meiringen with its many shops, restaurants, banks/ATMs and train and bus terminals.

The friendly landlady, Frau Erika Gsteiger-Imdorf, lives in the same house. Although she does not speak English, she tries very hard to please her guests.

Meiringen, Switzerland - Heartland, Home of Chalet Erika

Meiringen, a bustling small town of 5,000, lies in a deep valley surrounded by high mountains, from which drop numerous spectacular waterfalls. Located on one of the most important and centuries-old trade routes through the Alps, Meiringen’s reputation as a tourist center started with Louis Agassiz’s scientific expedition to the Grimsel Pass in the nineteenth century and the coming of the car.

Today, it is the point of origin for more exciting Alpine bus trips than perhaps any town in Europe (Grimsel and Susten Passes, Rosenlaui and Grindelwald.) It is also the starting point for excursions to the famous Aare Gorge, formed during the last Ice Age, and the Reichenbach waterfalls. Michael’s Church is one of the most beautiful concert halls in central Europe and venue for an annual music festival in the summer.

Meiringen offers a great variety of restaurants, 2 large supermarkets, shops of all kinds, banks and ATMs, a fascinating local folk culture museum and excavations of ruins dating back to the first millennium.

If that’s not enough, an amazing number of walks, hikes and climbs originate within 30 minutes of the town and range from easy to challenging.

Meiringen is well situated as a central base for travel throughout Switzerland or as the starting point for excursions into the high Alps of the Bernese Oberland. Hourly rail service on the famed Brunig Pass line connects it in 35 minutes with the resort town of Interlaken and in 90 minutes with the city of Luzern.

"I can't imagine a more wonderful setting for our visit. Meiringen is a lovely town with accessibility to major cities. We went to Lausanne, Montreaux, Lucerne, Bern, Thun and Interlaken (many times), Murren and many points in between. What a great way to experience the cultures of Switzerland!" A. Cain

Customer comments about Chalet Erika, Meiringen, Switzerland - Heartland

"Frau Gsteiger-Imdorf has installed a screen on the bedroom window, which was very much appreciated by my companion and me. It is probably the only screened window in Switzerland! Also, many cooking tools, coffee maker, toaster, dishwasher, microwave, umbrellas, telephone, TV, DVD player, bedside lamps, iron and ironing board, washer/dryer combo (which was out of commission during our visit, no big deal - she will do laundry). Neighborhood felt very safe day and night, walking in Meiringen felt safe with no threat of item grabbing (camera, backpack, purse). All trains/buses/boats etc are ON TIME! Meiringen is extremely clean and people are friendly and polite, and most have some English. Also, there are ATMs everywhere, two large grocery stores, and clerks that speak English in the post office. In addition, Switzerland's train depots are staffed with multi-lingual folks, and they offer routing and destination information to visitors (extremely helpful)." Lila Black

"Chalet Erika was delightful. Erika is a wonderful hostess and the language barrier was no problem. The location was great." Chuck Nolop

"The apartment was exceptionally well outfitted with all of the utensils and appliances that one could possibly want." Del Fillmore

"We couldn't have found a better apartment or hostess. I have read some complaints that it was small. It was, but that didn't deter us from the other postive aspects. It was cozy, Erika was very helpful." Hildegard Bansbach

"Anything you could possibly need for cooking was available. It was wonderful to have a microwave which actually saves energy compared to using the oven." Laura Amundson

"This apartment was great even though it was small. everything was there that you possibly could have needed. It was really perfect for two people. We would stay here again in a heart beat and have talked about when we return to CH we would stay in the Heartland and Chalet Erika. The town has so much to offer and getting around was great. Frau Erika was a complete gem!!! I was embarrassed I did not know German so I could have talked with her. She was kind enough to call someone that spoke English when both of us needed to answer each others questions. I can't say enough good things about her and her adorable apartment. Yes it was small but it was quite charming and Frau Erika made it all the more so." Lisa Buffenmyer

"The apartment was as Untours described. Very well done except very small and full! Seems as though Erika put everything she could think of for our use. It was well stocked with everything one could possibly want." Lowell & Sara Jane Pearce

“Frau Erika is a very kind and pleasant woman. Because of the language barrier (we speak only English) we did not have much interaction with her. We believe she thought we were good renters. She gave us bear icing pastries the day before we left, took our pictures, had her English speaking friend ask us to come back again.” Sara Jane & Lowell Pearce

"An extremely wonderful hostess. This apartment is by far the most completly furnished of any Untour apartment in which we have stayed, and there have been many." Marjorie Barnes

"A kitchen worthy of a chef." Lawrence & Joanne Burris

"Frau Gsteiger treated us like family. What a delight seeing her daily! When she saw us leaving one morning in the rain she ran to to give us an umbrella. Thanking her we kept walking & she caught up with us again on her bike, bringing a 2nd umbrella." Herb & Barbara Ritschard
