Spoleto, Italy - Umbria, Home of Ettore Lower
Our apartments are in the countryside, about 20 minutes north of Spoleto.
Spoleto is an enchanting town and a convenient home base for exploring Umbria. With roots in ancient Rome, the town was first settled in 241 B.C. Visitors can tour an ancient Roman theater, along with an archeological museum. Today, Spoleto is internationally known for its annual music and performing arts festival (the Spoleto Festival, formerly called the Festival of Two Worlds), which draws international artists and audiences and lends a cosmopolitan feel to this small, attractive town every July. Even without the concert crowd, the town’s Duomo and adjoining piazza offer a wonderful reason to visit. Other piazzas in town buzz with activity. Favorite sights include the sacred art museum and the town’s own modern art museum. Visitors can also tour the hilltop castle or walk across the impressive medieval aqueduct that spans the valley, with lovely views leading to walking trails.
Spoleto is full of small shops and boutiques, with banks, grocery shopping, cafés, a weekly open-air market and excellent restaurants. Spoleto also offers a train station with express service to Rome.
Closer to the apartments, the village of La Bruna is a convenient hub for groceries, coffee, banking and other errands. It’s about 5 minutes from the apartment.
Umbria is often called Italy’s “Green Heart,” making the beautiful area around Spoleto the perfect base for a 2-week stay. The rugged Umbrian hills give way to sweeping views of olive groves. And the small towns carry on, unchanged by time, and largely undiscovered by American tourists.
The Spoleto-area apartments are about 20 minutes north of town and about 20 minutes south of Trevi. Assisi is about a 45-minute drive and Perugia is about an hour away. By express train, Rome is about 90 minutes from town.
Customer comments about Ettore Lower, Spoleto, Italy - Umbria
"Absolutely wonderful apt and host. Parts of the apt complex dated back to 1582 and arches were preserved throughout the apt and other buildings. Olive oil vats of impressive size and full of flowers graced the lawn. Ettore is a working farm and ironically it was tobacco cutting time; we learned a great deal about tobacco and olive oil." William Packard
"We had a great experience during our orientation briefing at Ettore Benedetti del Rio's farm. He is a delightful man who gave us lots of his time in showing us around his place and we especially enjoyed his giving us the history of his farm which has been in his family for several hundred years. The antique farm equipment, and large antique terra cotta vases used for storing olive oil produced on the farm was also very interesting. Then there was the wonderful lunch he provided. Several courses, all delicious and washed down with his special homemade wine. It was one of the highlights of our trip." Ron Redman
"Ettore and Lorella are great hosts. They both have an obvious passion for what they are doing. In addition to a great cooking class. Ettore provided lots of history about his farm and his family that made the visit even more memorable.
We know that the Benedetti del Rios are relatively new to the Untours community and we wanted to give a very strong endorsement of their efforts to make Umbrian Untours memorable. " Ted & Paula Massa
