Heartland Oberland Switzerland Untourist of the Week

Bob & Doris Miller are some of our most active members in the Untourist community (even though, in their nineties, they say their European wanderings are behind them.) In the years between 1994 and 2007, they regularly led trips of their hiking Club to Switzerland. Bob still contributes regularly and enthusiastically to Idyllchat, our email conversation, and never fails to sing the praises of the “triplogs“, the written accounts Untourists share with one another of their travels.  Below, you see him literally being the poster child for his retirement community (this is the cover for their annual report).

Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour:

Our most recent (and sadly, last) Untour was to our favorite overseas destination, Switzerland. We have been to Switzerland 12 times, nine of which were UnTours. (We didn’t know about UnTours prior to that.) This occurred in 2007 and was our third visit to Sachseln. We stayed in one of the apartments hosted by Berit and Albert Greutert.

Why did you choose to go there?

Mainly because of the warm, personal hospitality offered by Berit and Albert Greutert. They were not only great hosts but they took us on personal outings to areas we would have not otherwise been able to visit.

What is your favorite UnTours memory?

Visiting the cheese making huts high in the Alps and having an opportunity to see this fascinating procedure. Also the abundant hiking opporunities.

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?

One is allowed to go where you want, when you want and if you want. It’s an opportunity to pleasantly blend into the local culture.

If you could describe an Untour in just 3 words, what would they be?

Freedom, support, modest cost.
