Things to do in Leiden

Day trips and Sightseeing: Holland (or correctly: “The Netherlands”) offers picturesque towns, superb museums, beautiful canals, windmills, excellent bicycling and exuberant flower exhibits. Will there be enough to do for 2 weeks? You bet. You’d need more time than this just to visit all the major museums. Besides, Belgium is not far either. Cities include: Amsterdam, Delft, The Hague, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht, Gouda. There is surely no single place in Europe with more world-class museums per square mile than Holland: Leiden alone has 12 museums, including the National Antiquities and Ethnology Museums; Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Kröller-Müller Museum, Porcelain Factory in Delft, Mauritshuis in The Hague, Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. Visits to the Keukenhof in Lisse, or the Aalsmeer Flower Auction will put flower lovers into seventh heaven. The windmills that everyone thinks of when they think of Holland are close by: Molenmuseum “De Valk” in Leiden, and The Kinderdijk between Rotterdam and Dordrecht. Even brief ventures into Belgium: Brugges (3 hours) and Brussels (2.5 hours) are possible.

Off-the-beaten-track treasures that can’t be beat: Try a walking tour of Amsterdam and a tour of seventeenth-century Dutch Masters on display at the Rijksmuseum or attend a concert at the world-famous Royal Concertgebouw. Visit the Aalsmer Flower Auction. Even the humble pleasures of buying fresh bread and pastries at the bakery down the street or shopping for bread, cheese, spices, fish or flowers at Leiden’s open-air market are unforgettable on a Dutch UnTour.

Riding through the tulip fields!!! Leiden is a wonderful town, fun to explore and easy to travel to anywhere in Holland.

I loved the food, people, bicycles, flowers, shops, street markets, weather (we had sunshine every day) and our homebase apartment.

The "flow" of our vacation - UnTour personnel have this down to a science, yet they dealt with our travel delay from the Rhine Valley (power outages and flooding) very smoothly. We always felt that things were under control and never worried about the details - a wonderful luxury for us as first-timers.

★★★★★

We enjoyed the entire trip. Edmond was an excellent guide. Holland is now one of our favorite European countries. Everyone we met was exceptionally helpful and friendly.

Douglas Groover

Marlous did an excellent job of showing us how to use the transportation system; she spent half of the day with us.

Mark Price

The orientation walks in Leiden and Amsterdam were excellent. As usual, having an apartment allowed us to shop at the local markets, prepare most of our own meals and save both time and money as compared to eating in restaurants. The ability to control our own schedule is a wonderful feature of an UnTour. The rail pass worked extremely well in a country such as Holland.

The rail system is superb and makes it easy to travel around the country. The city of Leiden is an excellent home base -- it is charming, has a great windmill museum and a nice combination of student- and permanent residents.

Margaret McLean

★★★★★

Leiden is a perfect base. We would not want to be in either Amsterdam or Rotterdam. We were delighted with the wealth of music recitals we were able to enjoy in Leiden.

★★★★★

Leiden was a great location--in itself and for it's easy access to so many other towns. We love staying in one place and getting to know an area well. UnTour made it so easy to get there, settle in and make it our home for two weeks. The welcoming food, the guide books and maps, the orientation, etc----it seems you've thought of all the little things to make it easy!
