Family travel Heartland Switzerland Untourist of the Week

Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour.

In 2011, we visited the Swiss Heartland for three weeks.  This was our second Untour and our second time in Lungern.  Both times we stayed at the Gasser-Müggler apartment; the hosts are a lovely older couple, and the property is warm and welcoming to our family of four.  We travel with two sons, ages 18 and 11.  The Swiss Heartland is a wonderful family destination.  During our last trip, we hiked, swam in Lake Lungern, snow tubed on Mt. Titlis (Engelberg), visited two more museums than we could count, did multiple “day trips” including Bern, Luzern, Montreux, Basil, and Zurich.   While in Switzerland, we celebrated our son’s 18th birthday in Interlaken, where he chose to skydive surrounded by the Alps.  He said it was an experience he may never top!

What is your favorite UnTours memory?

We have so many treasured memories from our family trips to Switzerland.  It is hard to choose just one… but one stand-out is the day trip to Zermatt, where we viewed the Matterhorn from the Sunnegga Paradise (Rothorn).  It was breathtaking!  And truly a Swiss “Mountain Experience.”

How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?

We are not the type of family that enjoys a strict schedule or hour-by-hour tour.  Untour offers the best of both worlds – someone is nearby to assist if we need it (like the time we needed to find a doctor), yet we are left alone with the resources to explore a region and truly “live like a local.”  The most incredible sites and adventures are just a train ride away.

In Lungern, we felt like we had a second home.  We walked daily to the village store and bought fresh eggs, milk, and vegetables; we went to the baker and cheese shops for the best bread and dairy products we have ever tasted.   The people in the Heartland are kind and amiable.  One day, our sons took a soccer ball to the nearby park, and in minutes a dozen children (who only spoke German) appeared for a friendly game of “football.”

If you could describe an Untour in just 3 words, what would they be?
