Austria Untour, Summer of 2005
by Sarah and Peter Szabo, Delaware, OH
We went to Pfarrwerfen, Austria for our Honeymoon and stayed in the Gschwandtner apartment.

When we arrived, she wasn't quite ready for us because the previous tenants had left only an hour before we arrived. She was concerned, but we more than happy to sit on her lounge chairs in the shade of her beautiful house and stare at the mountains towering over us. Our room was so wonderful, it was absolutely perfect. Everything was beautifully decorated and so neat! There were two bottles of champagne and apricot struedel, made by Frau Gschwandtner, which was the best we had the entire stay! The fridge had a few essentials in it, which was perfect for us, before we could get to the store.

We loved being right near the train station, grocery store, and a wonderful restaurant. The restaurant right next to the apartment, which is highly recommended by everyone who has stayed there, is also owned by Frau Gschwandtner's nephew. The food is excellent, and Barbara speaks impeccable English and is eager to learn all about her guests!

The orientation...what can I say, I don't know what we would have done without it! Lisa was wonderful! She is extremely easy to contact if you need any help and of course she speaks English. (she's American!)

We traveled often to the small towns, Golling being our favorite. There are wonderful shops. If you are looking for authentic Austrian clothing, Ganzer is a wonderful store. My husband bought a beautiful linen jacket and I a hand made leather purse. There is also Cafe Maeir (spelling may be wrong) which has delightful treats! Strudels, pastries, ice cream and more. Next to that is the Gasthof Haslwirt, which we decided had the best food out of any place we went to! It is comfortable and affordable and the food is amazing. Joseph, a waiter, speaks wonderful english and has been to California! Also in Golling is the Gasthof where you can rent bikes for 5 euro a day. Riding bikes just for a while is worth it. To ride through the country and have the mountains surrounding you is so amazing. Not to mention Golling had Anne and Trish there, other Untourists who we just fell in love with! They will be our friends for many years.

Werfen is another great town. If you're looking for a wonderful Austrian hat (man or woman), scarf, or jacket (all handmade in town or Austria in general) go to the Hut Macher, Zapf. It is at the end of the main road of town. The prices are reasonable and the owner will take all the necessary time to help you. My husband is truly Austrian with his hat and jacket!!

Salzburg is a wonderful place. I definitely suggest seeing a concert at the Dom Cathedral, or anywhere. It is so powerful to hear music in such a musical city. For Peter and I, it was very meaningful and one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. However, we found it extremely touristy. It is definitely a place to watch yourselves and your belongings. We preferred being in the villages.

We traveled to Dachau. It is a long trip. A word to the wise, when you take the train all the way to Dachau Stadt (the last train stop for the camp) make sure you have previously figured out the bus situation. The walk from the station to the camp, although flat and nice, is at least a 3 mile walk. For us young ones it was ok, but on a hot day it was unexpected! The camp is very interesting and educational, and the last English tour on weekends is at 1:30pm so make sure you give yourself enough time to get there. And also, eat before you go; it's a long tour and don't go to the "Pizza and More" shop across from the camp. It is not a good place.

As honeymooners we had the time of our lives. Austria is so beautiful, clean and well preserved. All the people are marvelous. If you travel to Germany, you will notice a significant difference in the people. We are so happy that our Untour worked so well for us. It isn't a tour, which we were afraid of, but seeing all the material beforehand and then going there, it couldn't have been more perfect. Make sure you bring your "Rick Steves, German" which is highly recommended by us, and Trish and Anne. It is a great reference book that prepares you for anything!

Happy Untouring!
