Italy Tuscany Untourist of the Week Venice

Woops, we were a little topsy-turvy this week. Our excerpts of Susan Umberger’s delightful account of her Venice-Tuscany Untour Sampler came to you backwards, as she was in Venice (today’s entry) first, and Tuscany (last week’s entry)afterwards . But you can read her entire triplog here, in the proper order!

My husband and I arrived at the Marco Polo airport for the first leg of our Venice/Tuscany Sampler. We were a little early, but had an espresso and walked around inside and out while we waited for our transport to Donna Onesta, our apartment for the week. The water taxi was unexpected luxury, thatโ€™s the way to arrive in Venice! And our apartment was beautiful and located only steps from the taxiโ€ฆ

The next day we met up with Denny, a fantastic UnTours rep, and had a great walking tour of the area around Campo Santa Margherita. We had an exceptional lunch (went back later for dinner) and then an interesting tour of a squero, where gondolas are made and repaired. What a fabulous introduction to Venice and some of her customs.

We enjoy exploring, so we went in search of gelato and a market. Both were quite easy to locate, and we cooked many meals in our apartment. But we also ate out, and enjoyed our early morning visit to St. Markโ€™s, the island of Murano, and the exceptional Scuola San Rocco. The Tintoretto paintings took my breath! Venice Jazz Club rates a visit too; itโ€™s fun to find things to do that are just a little different.

All too soon it was time to pack up and make our drive from Venice to Buonconvento, in Tuscany!
