Second Arrondissement, France - Paris, Home of Bourse
In the very heart of Paris, the 2nd arrondissement, though smaller than many of the neighboring arrondissements, is a dense mixture of commerce, quiet streets, cafés and top tour attractions. The western portion of this quarter is bordered by the grandiose Opéra Garnier, an opulent structure recently restored to its former glory and the Place Vendome, a royal square that today is home to the Ritz Carlton and a host of high end boutiques.
In the center of this district is la Bourse, the seat of the French Stock Exchange as well as the Comédie Française, France's national theater. In the eastern area of the 2nd arrondissement, thriving neighboorhoods bustle with activity. The rue Montorgeuil is devoted almost entirely to the pleasures of the palette, with restaurants, cafés, and specialty food shop lining the street and the nearby Châtelet area, just to the south, offers a maze of streets teaming with cafés, restaurants, and shops. The shopping mall, les Halles, is always buzzing with activity and is one of Paris's major transportation hubs with 5 Metro lines and 3 RER (suburban train) lines running through it.
The 2nd Arrondissement is an ideal place to be located in Paris since so much of area surrounding it can be explored on foot. Both the Louvre, one of the most famous art museums in the world, and the lovely Tuileries Garden are just a short walk away. Other sights can be reached by taking the Metro, one of the safest and most efficient subway systems in the world.
If your plans include travel to areas outside Paris, the RER (regional train) can transport you quickly and economically. Day trips to the Versailles Palace, Disneyland Paris, Monet’s home in Giverny, and the Chartres cathedral are easily accomplished and well worth the trip.
