Oberwesel, Germany - Rhine, Home of Spaetburgunder
Oberwesel, with its accessible historic town walls and moat is known as "the town of towers." Sprinkled with half-timbered houses, Oberwesel offers 6 historic restaurants and 8 vintners/wineries with tasting rooms for all to enjoy.
Schonburg Castle watches over the town with its 2 Gothic churches, the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and St. Martin both dating from the 1300s. Today the spacious castle houses a hotel with a restaurant and private gallery. An International Youth Hostel has been built next door. The footpath leading from the center of town to Schonburg Castle is a 30-minute stroll.
You’ll be staying in the area known as the Middle Rhine. Oberwesel is located on the west side of the Rhine below St. Goar and above Bacharach. This area is world-renowned for its wine. The endless hills of vineyards provide a beautiful backdrop for a hike or boat ride along the Rhine. The wide bike paths along the Rhine make this a most enjoyable area for cycling, getting to know the region in a much slower, more intimate way. You can easily rent a bike by the day or week, and some landlords even provide them for your enjoyment. The bakery museum in town is worth a visit, as well as a trip to the various bakeries to enjoy the local specialties.
Oberwesel has a nice variety of restaurants, butcher shops, bakeries, souvenir shops, banks with ATM, tourist information office, and coffee shops. From May through October, the Middle Rhineland region has many festivals including the famous Rhine in Flames, which takes place in various villages along the river. This spectacular display of fireworks takes place on barges and hills along the river and builds to a crescendo that makes the river appear as if it’s on fire.
From Oberwesel, you can easily take long day trips by train to Koblenz and further on to the Roman city of Trier with its magnificent Roman ruins. Discover other unique villages in the area on the Moslem River, or head to Cologne to visit the awe-inspiring cathedral. Shorter day trips along the Rhine are accessible by the KD boats. All you have to do is decide when and where to disembark as you cruise up and down this mighty river, where 30 different castles decorate a 10-mile stretch.
Customer comments about Spaetburgunder, Oberwesel, Germany - Rhine
"A nice clean apartment located in a very good location." Gilles and Elaine Joubert
"Overall the apartment was fantastic! Enough living space and bathroom was huge. Very light and bright with windows and the attached deck was a wonderful perk. Though close to the train tracks, there was never any noise. Because our landlord was out of town (which we knew and accepted) we could have used a change of bed linens after week one. The location was perfect - close to everything we needed." Jane Thompson
"We were surprised at how spacious and colorful the apartment was and enjoyed the artwork on the walls. Loved having meals and glasses of dry Riesling on our large, covered balcony. You couln't be more centrally located; bakery, restaurants and grocery store were close by." Cathrin Baumbach (Untours staff)
"Apartment was lovely. Noisy during day, but that can't be helped due to cobblestone streets and center of town. Terrace was very nice! Karen and David Acker
